‘Mario [Cristobal] Just Stuffed Kirby [Smart] in a Locker!’ — CFB World Reacts As 5-Star CB Ditches Georgia for Miami

Miami is pulling off another strong recruiting class in 2027, which previously had 10 commits, including a five-star recruit like Nick Lennear. The Hurricanes jumped to 11 commitments on Saturday by securing a five-star cornerback, which lifted them to the No. 1 class in the ACC.

Miami Flips Five-Star Cornerback Donte Wright from Georgia

Mario Cristobal and his Miami squad had an incredible Saturday, as the Hurricanes flipped five-star cornerback Donte Wright from Georgia. It is surely a great loss for Kirby Smart’s program, as Wright had been committed to the Bulldogs for almost a full year and was even scheduled to take his official visit to Athens on May 29.

However, it now seems unlikely that the Georgia trip will take place, and the Bulldogs are now down to six commits.

“Mario just stuffed Kirby in a locker!” “Locked On Canes” podcast host Alex Donno tweeted.

“Wrote late last month that Wright was nearing the end of his process and that Miami formalizing the hire of their cornerbacks coach would be impactful. Both turned out to be true,” Gaby Urrutia of 247Sports tweeted.

Other programs were also trying to flip Wright from Georgia, as Oregon was trending in his recruitment for a time. Even UCLA was in the competition as well, but Miami won out in the end. He visited the Hurricanes earlier this spring and bonded well with Cristobal, as well as defensive back coaches like Will Harris and Terry Jefferson.

As for why he chose Miami, Wright told CaneSports’ EJ Holland that the Hurricanes “take ball seriously and try to win big things here.”

Wright is a versatile defensive back who has repeatedly proved his caliber to play anywhere in the secondary, as Rivals analyst Greg Biggins wrote in April. He will be a magnificent addition to the Hurricanes’ defense, which ranked No. 5 in the PFSN College Football Defense Impact Metric last season.

“Miami with the flip of the day,” On3/Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong wrote.

“What an absolute stunner with Miami landing 5-Star CB Donte Wright this afternoon,” South Florida sports analyst Geo Milion said.

“Donte Wright is officially the highest-rated CB Miami has ever landed..Not one of the highest. THE highest. And to make it even sweeter? He was once committed to Georgia. Mario Cristobal and Miami just flipped a generational talent,” Caneville tweeted.

Wright is the No. 1 recruit in California, the No. 2 cornerback in the 2027 class, and the No. 8 prospect in the nation, according to the Rivals’ Industry Rankings.
