Marcus Freeman Weighs Redshirt for Jaden Greathouse as Notre Dame Plans to Save Him for CFP

Marcus Freeman shares an update on Jaden Greathouse's redshirt potential amid his battle with injuries this season.

Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame squad secured its eighth consecutive victory with a 37-15 win over Pittsburgh last week. The win has kept the program firmly in the playoff hunt as long as it continues to take care of business.

Now sitting at 8-2 for the 2025 season, the Irish are gearing up to host 3-7 Syracuse this week. Meanwhile, Freeman shared an important update on junior wideout Jaden Greathouse, who has been sidelined since late September.

Marcus Freeman Shares His Take on Jaden Greathouse’s Redshirt Potential

Notre Dame, currently ranked fourth on PFSN’s College Football tOLi, released its depth chart for the upcoming home game against Syracuse, listing Greathouse as the No. 2 option behind Will Pauling in the second wide receiver unit.

Greathouse has been dealing with a hamstring and thigh issue that recently required a procedure to remove excess blood.

However, his recovery has progressed enough that he is expected to return in December.

According to The Athletic’s Pete Sampson, Freeman said he has talked with Greathouse about the possibility of redshirting. “It’s taken him longer than we thought to get healthy, but he’s probably as close to being healthy right now as he’s been,” Freeman said.

“Is it right for us to make him play these last two games and cost him a year (of eligibility) if we can get away with saving him a whole year by not playing him?”

“Right now, that’s our mindset: If we don’t have to play him this week, let’s try not to. He’ll be ready, but we’re going to try to hold off on playing him in hopes of redshirting this year. If we play beyond Stanford, then he’ll be ready to go.”

Greathouse has appeared in only four games this season and recorded four catches for 73 yards. His absence even triggered speculation that he might transfer. However, Freeman dismissed those rumors last week by praising Greathouse’s effort to rehab and his determination to return.

“JG is putting so much work into trying to get that hamstring to where it needs to be,” Freeman said. “Mentally, he has been in a good place. He’s as frustrated as anybody. He wants to be out there, so we have to just keep working, and then we will see what happens here in the next days, weeks…”

Last season, Greathouse led the team with 592 receiving yards, with 233 of those coming in the final two games.
