Kyle Whittingham’s Family Open Up on New Michigan HC’s Mentality

New Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham's mentality is described in a positive light by his close family member.

Kyle Whittingham ultimately ended Michigan’s search for its next head coach after weeks of searching. He now becomes the 22nd head football coach in the Wolverines’ 146-year history. Following a 2025 season that ended with a 9-3 record and a B- rating in the PFSN College Football Offense Metric, Whittingham’s arrival offers renewed optimism for Michigan fans.

Kyle Whittingham’s Mentality Revealed by His Family

Michigan dismissed head coach Sherrone Moore on Dec. 10, and just two days later, Whittingham announced he was stepping down as Utah’s head coach. He left the Utes without revealing any immediate plans, only to resurface two weeks later in Ann Arbor as Michigan’s new head coach.

Football analyst Dave Fox had a Zoom with Whittingham’s brother, Cary, on Saturday, where his brother shared his thoughts on Whittingham as the Michigan Head Coach.

“If we’re talking specifically about Michigan, but we could talk about just any other team in general, Kyle’s going to go in and lay a great foundation and run a program right,” Cary said. “And if Michigan needs some course corrections and needs somebody they can depend on to lay a great foundation and have no issues, but get their ball rolling again. I’m sure they’ve got great resources.”

“They’ve got great resources. I’m sure if someone gets in there and basically gets back to their tradition, they’ll be a strong team. And Kyle fits everything I know of Michigan, and I’m not pretending to know what’s going on and what their culture is truly like and all that, but everything you see, it just seems a really good fit for Kyle’s mentality.”

Whittingham left Utah as the program’s all-time winningest coach, compiling a 177-88 (.668) record. With 21 years as head coach and 31 years on the staff since 1994, he is the second-longest-tenured coach in the country.

Whittingham’s hiring provides Michigan with a proven college football winner, and he was once praised by former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer as the best in the sport. Whittingham signed a five-year deal with the Wolverines, keeping him in Ann Arbor through the 2030 season.

Whittingham addressed Michigan fans via the program’s official X account.

“Michigan fans, Coach Kyle Whittingham here,” the Wolverines’ new HC said. “Honored to be here, honored to be the football coach of this great university, can’t wait to get working with our players, getting to know them, and getting Michigan football to where it should be.”

Michigan Athletic Director Warde Manuel introduced Whittingham as a leader of “exceptional character and principled leadership,” which resonated after a season marked by off-field distractions.

Wolverines players, including freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood and junior Bryson Kuzdzal, also echoed praise for Whittingham’s coaching ability.
