Lane Kiffin’s Son, Knox, Reveals Why He Won’t Be Playing for LSU Football

Lane Kiffin's son, Knox, made it clear that he doesn’t have any intention to play for his dad at LSU.

Lane Kiffin’s track record as a head coach is well established, especially when it comes to revitalizing programs at Florida Atlantic and Ole Miss. He led the Rebels to a historic 11-win regular season and their first College Football Playoff appearance in 2025 before taking over as LSU’s head coach.

With Ole Miss ranked No. 7 in the PFSN College Football Playoff Meter and preparing for its postseason run, Kiffin is focused on managing a smooth transition following the Brian Kelly era. Meanwhile, his son Knox is beginning to make steady progress in his own college recruitment journey.

Lane Kiffin’s Son, Knox, Breaks Silence on His Decision To Avoid LSU Football

Knox has officially enrolled at University Lab in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, which is a well-known high school located on LSU’s campus that consistently produces elite-level talent. He will begin classes there in January.

As a member of the 2028 recruiting class, Knox still has ample time to sort through his future college options, but one destination has already been ruled out. Despite his proximity to LSU, he has made it clear he does not intend to play there while his father is on staff.

“I don’t want to play for him,” Knox said via Rivals’ Adam Gorney. “I want to beat him.”

We have already seen how Shedeur Sanders thrived while playing for his father, Deion Sanders, at Colorado. Coach Prime handed his son the starting quarterback job for two seasons, and Shedeur capitalized on the opportunity. It was a positive example of a father-son pairing in Boulder.

Because of that, Knox’s stance is interesting, but his mindset has remained consistent. While Lane was still serving as Ole Miss’s head coach, Knox told On3/Rivals in October that he had no desire to play under his father.

“I’m definitely not going to play for my dad,” Knox told Rivals. “I want to do my own stuff.”

Knox is currently unranked as a recruit and has recently picked up offers from Washington and Cal during a busy stretch, along with Power Four offers from SMU and Washington. His first scholarship offer came from Division II Mississippi College on April 1, 2024, and he also holds offers from Arkansas State, Western Kentucky, and FIU.

Knox started his high school career at Palos Verdes Peninsula (Calif.) and spent his sophomore year at Oxford High in Mississippi while his father was coaching at Ole Miss. He guided Oxford High to the state playoffs and helped the program reach No. 3 in Mississippi in 2025, according to the Massey Ratings. The team finished 11-2 and won the Mississippi Class 7A title before falling to Tupelo in the playoffs.

Knox opened the season as the backup quarterback but stepped in for the injured starter, Drew Dean, and Lane was thrilled to watch his son take over the role.

“I mean, that was awesome,” Kiffin said Oct. 20. “For a dad – I wish I could have been there, but I was watching on the phone, on the feed – there’s just something that, as only dads can explain about your kid playing ball and going down and winning the game like that.”

In six starts this season, Knox completed 67 of 114 passes for 1,236 yards and 14 touchdowns with only two interceptions, while also adding 167 rushing yards and two scores.
