Chris Henry Jr. Earns High Praise From Julian Sayin After Spring Game Performance

Henry led Ohio State in yards from scrimmage with four catches for 96 yards on Saturday. His most explosive moment came when he beat cornerback Jordan Thomas down the sideline, hauling in a perfectly placed 40-yard touchdown pass from Tavien St. Clair.

With his explosive potential, Henry is already earning high praise from Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin.

“He’s done a really good job,” Sayin said after Saturday’s spring game. “You know, he’s a big tall fast receiver, and can make great plays. I think you saw a couple today. He had some great plays today and I think he’s done a good job of developing in the program and I think he’s got a bright future.”

Henry arrived at Ohio State with high expectations as the No. 1 wide receiver in the 2026 recruiting class. As the son of the late NFL wide receiver Chris Henry of the Cincinnati Bengals, his journey has carried added attention from the moment he committed to the Buckeyes nearly three years ago while still early in his high school career.

That early commitment set the tone for expectations that he would eventually develop into a key offensive weapon in Columbus. Those expectations have begun to take shape this spring, particularly as Henry recently had his black stripe removed.

Much of the spring spotlight has gone toward other receivers competing for starting roles alongside Jeremiah Smith and Brandon Inniss, while transfer Devin McCuin has also been a frequent standout in practices open to the media. However, Henry continues to push his case with flashes of elite playmaking ability.

Ryan Day also made it clear that the door remains open for Henry to earn big playing time early if his development continues.

“He has to have the mentality that he wants to play from day one, and that he’s starting in the first game. That should be his goal,” Day said last month. “Now whether he does or not, we’ll see. But he has all the traits, he has all the skills. Everything that we thought he would be in recruiting, we’ve seen on the field.”

With 40,240 fans in attendance at Ohio Stadium for the spring game, Henry’s performance on Saturday came in a setting that carried real weight. He will now have to build on that performance in summer workouts and preseason camp to ultimately earn the starting job. If he can earn the starting job and live up to the expectations it will be a great boost to the Ohio State offense, which finished last season as the No. 3 team nationally in the PFSN College Football Offense Impact Metric.
