Florida Closing In On Their Billy Napier Replacement as Auburn Fades Away

Major coaching search update as Jon Sumrall weighs SEC options. Find out which program is making headway in landing the rising star.

The Florida Gators appear poised to land Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall as their next head football coach, with momentum shifting dramatically in their favor. After parting ways with Billy Napier following a disappointing 22-23 tenure, Florida has emerged as the frontrunner over Auburn and other SEC programs vying for the rising star coach.

Is Auburn Out of the Running?

The coaching carousel took a significant turn when reports surfaced that Auburn’s pursuit of Jon Sumrall had essentially collapsed.

Chris Vannini of The Athletic reported that “per sources, Auburn and Jon Sumrall are looking less and less likely, after getting very far along in the process.”

The Tigers had considered Sumrall their top candidate to replace Hugh Freeze. Still, negotiations broke down over Auburn’s insistence on retaining certain members of the previous coaching staff, particularly interim head coach DJ Durkin.

The program’s offensive inefficiency, averaging just 5.50 yards per play across 742 offensive snaps, made the Sumrall hire feel urgent for Tigers fans.

Sumrall ultimately withdrew his name from Auburn’s coaching search, leaving the Tigers scrambling for alternatives. According to multiple reports, the 43-year-old coach was uncomfortable with Auburn’s requirement to keep specific assistants, preferring complete autonomy over his program, something Florida was willing to offer.

Can Florida Close the Deal?

In a major development, CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello reported that “Florida has pulled ahead of Auburn in recent hours as Jon Sumrall weighs leaving Tulane, sources tell @CBSSports. Sumrall could also be in the mix at Ole Miss if it opens.”

This shift represents a significant victory for Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin, who pivoted from pursuing Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin after sensing inconsistent communication from Kiffin’s camp.

Florida has deployed heavy hitters to recruit Sumrall, including former Gators head coach Urban Meyer, who reportedly spoke with Sumrall about the opportunity to restore Florida to national prominence.

The Gators are offering Sumrall full control over the program and the resources necessary to compete for College Football Playoff berths in the expanded format.

What’s Next for Sumrall?

Sumrall guided Tulane to a 9-2 record this season and has compiled an impressive 41-11 record across four seasons as a head coach at Troy and Tulane.

After Tulane’s recent victory, Sumrall indicated he would make his decision by Sunday after consulting with his family. Tulane has countered with a $4 million annual salary offer to retain him, though Florida can likely exceed that figure.

While Ole Miss remains a potential landing spot depending on Lane Kiffin’s decision, Florida’s aggressive pursuit and willingness to provide complete program control have positioned the Gators as the clear favorite to land one of college football’s hottest coaching prospects.
