Jon Sumrall Deals Major Blow to Shane Beamer As 2027 Elite CB Flips

Jon Sumrall has injected a sense of urgency and toughness into the Florida program. His staff is continuing recruiting efforts to maintain momentum.

Four-star cornerback Aamaury Fountain flipped his commitment from South Carolina to Florida on Saturday. The 2027 class prospect committed to South Carolina on Jan. 2 after Shane Beamer’s program built momentum in his recruitment, and he was the second commit of the Gamecocks’ 2027 class at the time.

Florida Flips Four-Star CB From South Carolina

Fountain is a highly rated cornerback in the 2027 class, attending Northside High School in Warner Robins, Georgia. He holds offers from programs including Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia Tech.

Fountain visited Florida in January, eight days after committing to South Carolina, and has made four visits to Gainesville this year. Between his first and most recent trips, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound cornerback leaned toward Sumrall’s program.

“This has been building,” Fountain told Rivals. “That feeling at Florida is real. From the start, it just felt right. You can feel the greatness there. It’s in the air. I don’t know how else to explain it. You can’t make that up.

“I felt it the first time. It was different. I only went on that first visit because I told Coach Harris I would. It was me honoring my word, and they took advantage of it. After that first visit, I kept going back. Every time, it felt stronger.”

Fountain said he discussed the decision with his mother. She asked him questions regarding the commitment, and the Gators’ overall environment made the difference. Fountain said if he doesn’t like the environment outside of football, he is not going there, and that is where Florida stood out.

Fountain noted the program’s culture, stating Florida “got a chip on their shoulder,” and added that Sumrall’s impact was evident.

“Coach Sumrall has no fear,” Fountain said. “He’s not scared to go hard. He wins – and he backs it up. He’s been involved with me from the beginning. He calls me, FaceTimes me and told me I was his guy. We just clicked.”

If Fountain sticks to his commitment and signs with Florida, he bolsters a Gators defense that finished last season with a 77.8 score in the PFSN College Football Defense Impact Metric. The Gators have six committed players in the 2027 class, ranking No. 9 in the nation and No. 2 in the SEC, according to Rivals. Meanwhile, South Carolina is left with three committed players following Fountain’s flip and ranks No. 29 in the nation.
