Jon Gruden just received the best gift of his life. The gift in question? A laminated piece of paper that looks more like a diner menu than a strategic manifesto: a Mike Leach call sheet.
Jon Gruden Promises to Cherish Mike Leach Gift Forever
Following a session of his popular “QB Class” series, former Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson surprised the former Super Bowl-winning coach with the artifact. For Gruden, this wasn’t just memorabilia; it was a physical link to a coaching philosopher who fundamentally altered the geometry of the gridiron.
Gruden turned to his X handle to share the gift with the public. Fans could see him getting flabbergasted over the Leach call sheet. He wrote, “This could be the best gift I’ve ever gotten. After our QB Class episode, Sawyer Robertson gave me this and I had to get it framed… a freakin’ MIKE LEACH CALL SHEET! I truly can’t get over this, what a great man Mike Leach was. Thank you, Sawyer! I’ll always cherish this!”

In the clip, Gruden could be heard explaining, “So I took it to a frame shop. I got Mike Leach holding his little call sheet. Look at him right there. And there is the call sheet of the great Mike Leach, the ace check machine. What a freaking great coach, great friend. Thank you, Sawyer Robertson, Mike Leach. Get a ticket, man. The air raid offense, man. Awesome stuff.”

In the same clip, fans can see Gruden struggling to find a space for the newly framed Leach call sheet. He kept on wondering where to keep it.
“Man, we’re running out of wall space, but I’m going to put this on my coach’s wall. Look at my dad, Jim Gruden, coaching at Notre Dame. Bobby Knight, I was Coach Knight’s ball boy.
“And over here, how about Tommy Lasorda, one of my favorite great coaches? Should I put Mike Leach there? Should I put Mike Leach there underneath my dad and Bobby Knight?”
Gruden eventually decided to put the frame on the wall along with his dad’s frame. To understand the value of it, fans need to know the meaning behind it.
While most modern coordinators carry massive binders or oversized, color-coded sheets, Leach famously operated with a single, folded sheet of paper. He believed that if you practiced a small set of plays perfectly, it didn’t matter if the defense knew what was coming. They still couldn’t stop it.

The call sheet Robertson gifted Gruden represents that defiance of complexity. It contains the DNA of plays like “6” (Four Verticals) and “Y-Cross,” concepts that began in the “Air Raid” laboratories of Iowa Wesleyan and Valdosta State before eventually conquering the Big 12, the SEC, and the NFL.
Interestingly, Robertson, before transferring to Baylor, was a highly touted recruit for Mike Leach at Mississippi State. He was one of the last quarterbacks to be mentored by Leach before his untimely passing in 2022. By passing this call sheet to Gruden, Robertson acted as a bridge between two of football’s most eccentric and brilliant minds.
