New Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham managed to stop the exodus of players from Ann Arbor when he was appointed the Wolverines’ coach in December after former coach Sherrone Moore’s controversial dismissal. Whittingham retained most of the Wolverines’ talented players, including quarterback Bryce Underwood.
In addition to keeping most of the roster intact, Whittingham made significant changes to his staff, including hiring former Utah Utes offensive coordinator Jason Beck and BYU Cougars defensive coordinator Jay Hill.
Defensive Coordinator Jay Hill Details Michigan’s Championship Ambitions
While speaking to reporters on Sunday, Hill discussed building a winning culture in Ann Arbor and addressed whether the Wolverines would be ready to win a national championship so early into Whittingham’s tenure.
“You’re building a culture. You’re building an identity that we want to have,” Hill said. “I’m not saying that anything really had to be fixed, but we’re building our own identity. So is it a rebuild in that? Yes. Do we expect to be good in year one? Absolutely.
“Do we expect to be competing for championships, all that? That’s why we came here. So I don’t think it’s fair for anyone to say they’re in a rebuild. In college football, no one puts up with that in today’s world. But there are definitely things that we’re building.”

Under former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale last season, the Wolverines earned a PFSN College Defense Impact score of 81.6, good for No. 7 in the Big Ten, well behind the conference leader, the Indiana Hoosiers, who posted an impressive 97.9 en route to winning the conference and national titles.
Hill Aims to Recreate Michigan’s National Championship Defense
While speaking to reporters on Thursday, Hill revealed that he hopes to recreate former Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter’s 2023 national championship-winning defense with the current team.
“They just won a national championship a couple years ago with one of the best teams in the history of college football,” Hill said. “I think that’s a really good idea of what it (Hill’s current defensive scheme) looks like.
“But we want to be multiple in the front, three down and four down, we want to be multiple with our coverages and we want to be multiple with our blitz packages, man pressure, zone pressures, two-high pressures, three-high pressures.”
The Wolverines’ 2023 national championship-winning defense, overseen by Minter, won the program’s first title in 26 years and ranked No. 1 in the country, allowing a measly 10.4 points and 247 yards per game.
