Where Are the Two Teams Standing Heading Into the Peach Bowl?
Ahead of tonight’s game, both teams are coming off blowout victories against Alabama and Texas Tech. When the sides met previously in the regular season, Curt Cignetti’s Hoosiers came out on top 30-20 in the Big Ten clash.
“It’s hard to beat a great team twice,” Cignetti stated earlier in the week. However, during his most recent press conference alongside Oregon head coach, the Indiana head coach explained what he believes Indiana has to do in order to reach the national championship.
“We talk about the same thing every single game, line of scrimmage, run the ball, stop the run, affect the quarterback, protect the quarterback, turnover ratio,” Cignetti explained. During their most recent matchup, Indiana dominated the turnover ratio with two interceptions.
However, against Texas Tech, Oregon’s defense, ranking 11th nationally according to PFSN’s DPI ranking, forced four turnovers and recorded four sacks. Lanning explained the importance of the turnover battle during the recent press conference.
“I think it always starts with the ball. The team that’s able to take care of the ball. Last time we played, we didn’t. You have to take care of the ball. We were able to create a takeaway as well, but we ended up having two. I think that’s a big piece of this.” Lanning stated.
This season, Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, who ranked first in voting ahead of Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia, finished the season with just six interceptions and 36 touchdowns. Lanning singled out Mendoza during the recent presser.
“I think one of the things that really sticks out with Mendoza is he takes the ball where it’s supposed to go. And doesn’t get enough credit for his feet, is an unbelievable scrambler, was able to do that against us last time.” The Ducks’ head coach stated.
Following the most recent press conference, it’s evident that getting to the quarterback and forcing turnovers will be one of the most important parts of tonight’s Peach Bowl matchup. However, with two of the best quarterbacks in college football, that will be easier said than done.
