Bret Bielema just blitzed back. And he brought the whole Big Ten with him.
The Illinois head coach isn’t one to sit quietly in the pocket, and when Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia threw a deep shot at the Big Ten on a recent podcast, Bielema came out guns blazing.
Illinois Coach Bret Bielema Claps Back At Pavia’s Provocation
During his Bussin’ With The Boys appearance, Pavia said, “You want to play with the best, you don’t want to play with the Big Ten,” Pavia said. “You ignore those calls. Pavia also insinuates that SEC has a better selection of strong teams than the Big Ten.
He took a shot at Purdue and Nebraska and said, “The SEC, it’s like week after week after week. Like, you’re going to get beat on. The Big Ten, you’re not getting beat on with Purdue, Nebraska.” He also added, “You only have to score 7 points to beat Iowa.”
The remarks hit a nerve with Bielema, a legend who has spent his life at the Big Ten, playing at Iowa and led Wisconsin to success before taking over at Illinois. “He’s regurgitating what’s been said to him, probably,” Bielema told reporters.
“I grew up in this league. I was very successful at Wisconsin. My first bowl game, we beat an SEC team I later worked for.”

Bielema pointed to the Big Ten’s 2024 season as proof of its strength. The conference sent four teams: Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, and Penn State, to the College Football Playoff, outpacing the SEC’s three.
Ohio State clinched the national title, defeating Notre Dame, while the SEC’s Texas fell to the Buckeyes in the semifinals. Indiana, an unexpected contender, posted a program-record 11-1 regular season, showing the Big Ten’s strength.

Illinois, coming off a 10-3 campaign in 2024, showed how effective Bielema is for his team. He sees his team, like Indiana, as evidence that the Big Ten can produce unexpected powerhouses. “The evolution of college football with the portal and NIL has created a level playing field,” he said to On3. “It’s trending more that way than going back to the past.”
In the end, as the SEC and Big Ten struggle for dominance, Pavia’s jab may spark more than just controversy. Vanderbilt’s game against Alabama hangs in the air as a chance for Pavia to back his talk, while Bielema’s Illini aim to keep proving the Big Ten’s worth.
With the 2025 season heating up, the field, not the podcast, will settle the score.
