The Florida Gators’ 18-16 loss to South Florida was more than just an upset; it was a concerning reflection of deeper issues under head coach Billy Napier. The defeat marked the 14th time in his tenure that Florida failed to score more than 20 points, leaving fans frustrated and the program at a crossroads.
During his Monday press conference, Napier did not shy away from criticism of his offensive approach, which he admitted was “not good enough.” However, he reiterated that he would continue to handle play-calling duties himself, even as questions mount about whether that decision is holding the Gators back. At the heart of the issue lies the future of the head coach and his star signal-caller at the Swamp.
How Does Billy Napier’s Contract Complicate Florida’s Decision?
Napier’s contract, signed in 2021, complicates matters significantly. The seven-year, $51.8 million deal includes a hefty buyout, making a coaching change costly. ESPN insider Pete Thamel broke down Florida’s unique challenge if it decides to move on from its head coach.
“Interesting about Napier’s buyout is there’s no offset or mitigation, so he gets it all, which is pretty rare. Even Lincoln Riley’s $100 million contract, I think the buyouts are around 80 now, those get offset. If he goes and becomes a $5 million-a-year NFL play-caller or whatever, like Chip did, that would get offset from the buyout. So you can make it more manageable,” Thamel said.
He added, “This is like $20 million, I believe, $10 million in the first 30 days. I think it’s $20.4 million, with half of it due in the first 30 days, and then they have to just pay the rest… I don’t care where you are, in modern college football, that’s just a lot of money.”
That massive financial commitment has Gators administrators weighing the risks of firing Napier against the dangers of keeping him. However, the growing concerns about the team’s on-field performance present an even bigger headache for the program.
Florida’s second-half struggles against USF highlighted these issues perfectly. The Gators punted on six of their seven drives after halftime, failing to sustain momentum despite having opportunities to close the game.
Is DJ Lagway’s Uneven Play a Major Concern?
Sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway looked respectable on paper, finishing 23-of-33 for 222 yards with a touchdown and an interception, but the game film told another story. Lagway missed multiple deep throws, overthrowing receivers at critical moments, including one pass that could have been a touchdown.
Most concerning was his inability to connect on anything beyond short-yardage situations. Of his 33 attempts, 22 were throws of fewer than nine yards, and he went a concerning 0-for-3 on passes of 20 or more yards.
What Is Florida’s Biggest Risk if Napier Is Fired?
Beyond the money, Florida also faces the potential fallout of losing its most important player. Thamel pointed out that Napier’s strong relationship with Lagway could ultimately determine the program’s future.
“If you fire Billy Napier, do you risk losing DJ Lagway? He was very clear about his fidelity towards him. That’s certainly something you’d talk about before you make the decision,” Thamel explained. “But I do think that’s interesting, right? Like, oh, you’re going to start over and whoever you bring in now, they can get their own guy, they can go find a John Mat or whatever. But I think DJ Lagway is pretty special still.”

Napier has survived waves of criticism before, but this time feels different. As Lagway shows flashes of talent but remains inconsistent, the patience once extended to the head coach is wearing thin.
With SEC play looming, the Gators are staring down the nation’s toughest schedule, which includes a test against Brian Kelly’s strong LSU team. The stakes are as high as ever, and Florida may face an unenviable decision if Napier cannot stabilize the offense and get Lagway trending upward soon.
