Lagway, now starting under center for the Gators, has displayed both promise and growing pains in his sophomore season. Over two games, he has completed 38 of his 51 pass attempts for 342 yards and four touchdowns.
“When the student struggles on the test, as a teacher, you got [sic] to take a good look in the mirror,” Napier said following Florida’s recent games.

While his season began strongly with a career-high QB rating of 194.3 against LIU, where he completed 83.3% of his passes (15-for-18) for 120 yards and three touchdowns, the second game against South Florida proved more challenging.
Lagway threw five interceptions, completing 23 of 33 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown, and added nine rushing yards on six carries.
Napier’s candid remarks underscore the coaching philosophy of accountability and player development, particularly in high-pressure situations where expectations are high. While Lagway has demonstrated flashes of elite potential, the coach believes evaluating coaching decisions is key to helping his quarterback grow.
Caleb Banks’ Injury Update Is a Major Blow for Florida’s Defense
Compounding the Gators’ early-season struggles, senior defensive tackle Caleb Banks has been ruled out indefinitely after re-aggravating a foot injury against No. 3 LSU.
Banks, a transfer from Louisville who joined Florida in 2023, had initially injured his foot during fall camp and missed the first two games of the season. He returned against LSU but suffered a setback near the end of the third quarter, leaving the field on crutches and in a walking boot.

Banks is considered one of Florida’s top interior defensive linemen and was named a preseason Second-Team All-SEC selection. His absence leaves a significant gap in the Gators’ defensive front, forcing the team to adjust its strategy as it faces upcoming opponents.
In 2024, Lagway appeared in 12 games, starting seven, and led the Gators to a 6-1 record as a starter. He threw for 1,915 yards with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions and tied former Gator Chris Leak for the most wins as a true freshman quarterback in Florida history.
