Going into the 2026 season, Florida State’s Mike Norvell has found himself at the absolute center of heat. Despite a contract that runs through 2031, the vibes in Tallahassee have shifted from championship aspirations to a grim sense of inevitability.
Why Florida State Head Coach Mike Norvell Is on the Hot Seat in 2026
The Athletic’s Chris Vannini recently shed light on the deteriorating situation on the latest episode of “Bunch Formation.” According to Vannini, Norvell is now the obvious candidate for the hot seat, drawing parallels to past tenures that felt over long before the official paperwork was filed.
“Mike Norvell is the obvious. He is the coach that feels fired going into the season,” Vannini remarked. “We have those from time to time. Clay Helton was one, Les Miles was one. So Mike Norvell is going to lead your hot seat talk right now.”
Both Helton and Miles survived for seasons, leading to a stagnant environment where the fan base eventually tuned out. At Florida State, that apathy is already setting in.
After the Seminoles missed a bowl game last year and endured two seasons of subpar performance, the euphoria of their near-playoff run in 2023 feels like a lifetime ago. As a result, it seems Seminoles fans have already given up on the program.
“Florida State fans, a lot of, from what I can tell, a lot of them are just like, have already given up on the season. Florida State’s got a bunch of Friday games this season that they’re kind of upset about. But some of them are like, ‘I don’t really want to go see the team anyway; I’ll come back to 2027 if we have a new coach by then,’” Vannini added.
The primary reason Norvell remains on the sidelines in Doak Campbell Stadium isn’t a lack of desire for change from the boosters. It’s the eye-watering price tag. Florida State is currently staring down a massive financial hurdle.
If FSU were to pull the trigger at the end of the 2026 season, Norvell’s buyout is estimated at approximately $51 million. This follows an even higher figure of roughly $58.4 million at the end of 2025.
“Does Mike Norvell survive? I would say no at this point, but also Florida State has to have the money to do it. The reason he’s still here is because they didn’t have the money to do it last year,” Vannini noted bluntly.
To save his job, Norvell is placing his bets on a veteran transfer to stabilize an offense that has been bad for two years. Florida State officially named Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels as the starting quarterback for 2026 following a spring battle.
Daniels brings a resume of 4,783 passing yards and 24 touchdowns across his college career. The Seminoles finished a disappointing 5-7 in 2025, and the 2026 schedule offers little room for a slow start.
So, for Norvell, the 2026 season isn’t just about winning games. It’s about reversing a narrative of decline. With a $51 million shield protecting him for now, he has the time, but he may have already lost the room.
According to PFSN’s CFB Playoff Meter, Florida State has projected total wins at 5.33.
