DJ Coleman Opens Up on Jon Sumrall’s Demanding Approach to Discipline at Florida

DJ Coleman reveals Jon Sumrall's demanding approach to discipline at Florida as the head coach works to rebuild the program.

Florida head coach Jon Sumrall has been hailed in college football circles for his efforts to return the Gators to elite status by raising standards in Gainesville since his appointment in December 2025. Sumrall has one of the biggest jobs in college football after the Gators fired Billy Napier in October 2025 and slumped to an 8-5 record.

Safety DJ Coleman Reveals Jon Sumrall’s Demanding Nature

Sumrall has been presiding over spring practice in Gainesville as he attempts to integrate his new players into the Florida roster ahead of a pivotal first season in charge of the college football blue blood.

While speaking to reporters after Tuesday’s spring practice session, safety DJ Coleman revealed the demanding nature of Sumrall’s training on Florida players. “He doesn’t allow anything soft, so you’ve got to be on to every day. If you’re not on it, he’ll let you know,” Coleman said.

Sumrall’s mandate includes turning around the Gators’ form that has included four losing seasons in the past five years. It is an astonishing fall from grace from the Urban Meyer era, during which they won two national championships and were among the elites in college football.

Since his arrival in Gainesville, Sumrall has stolen headlines with his tough policies. These include removing the Gators badge from players’ training uniforms until they had earned it back, a tradition that he borrowed from Meyer’s glory-filled tenure.

During last week’s segment of “Josh Pate’s College Football Show,” analyst Josh Pate revealed his optimism about Sumrall succeeding in turning around the Gators’ fortunes next season.

“They’ve put together a really good front office,” Pate said. “I think they’ve got the right people in the building. You just got to have the right leader in the building. I think that again. For what it’s worth.

“And my predictions on Florida leadership have not been worth a lot in the past few years, but I really think I’m going to nail this one. It comes down to the same thing. Is Jon Sumrall’s best good enough?”

In his two-year tenure in charge of the Tulane Green Wave, Sumrall went 21-5 and even clinched a much-coveted spot in the 12-team field for the College Football Playoff in 2025. In four seasons as a head coach at Troy and Tulane, Sumrall has compiled a 44-9 record, propelling his career to the SEC with the Gators.
