Probably the most shocking news for football fans on Tuesday was the announcement that Bill Belichick was not inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Despite creating the most dominant dynasty in NFL history as the former New England Patriots head coach, Belichick missed out on this honor.
Deion Sanders Calls Out the NFL Hall of Fame on Belichick Decision
The 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class will be announced on Feb. 5 during the NFL Honors. Belichick did not receive the necessary 40 votes from the 50-member selection panel, meaning at least 11 voters chose not to include him.
From LeBron James to Patrick Mahomes, reactions to Belichick not being a first-ballot Hall of Famer have been all over social media, with some voters expressing confusion over the decision. NFL legend and current Colorado head coach Deion Sanders was also one of many to voice his frustration following this snub.
“The Disrespect to Coach Belichick is straight out IGNORANT! He’s arguably the BEST NFL COACH TO EVER COACH THE GAME! How quickly we forget the impact Coach Belichick made on all of us! @nfl WOW! #CoachPrime,” Sanders tweeted.
Belichick is currently coaching the North Carolina Tar Heels, who finished the 2025 season 4-8 and ranked No. 85 in the PFSN College Football Offense Impact Metric with a 73.3 score.

The second-year UNC coach’s coaching career dates back to the mid-1970s, though he is best remembered for his 20-plus years with the New England Patriots, where he compiled a 266-121 record. He led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, marking the most by any NFL head coach in history.
Belichick reportedly reacted with surprise to his Hall of Fame snub, asking, “Six Super Bowls isn’t enough?”
Belichick is the third-winningest coach in NFL history with 302 regular-season wins. Some Hall of Fame voters told USA TODAY Sports that controversies like Spygate and Deflategate may have influenced his omission. ESPN’s Seth Wickersham reported that former Buffalo Bills GM and Hall of Fame selector Bill Polian told some voters that Belichick should “wait a year” as a form of retribution for Spygate, though Polian later denied making that statement.
Belichick competed not only in the coaching category this year but also against senior and contributor nominees, including Ken Anderson, L.C. Greenwood, Robert Kraft, and Roger Craig. He will now have to wait at least another year before he can be considered again for football’s most prestigious honor.
