Deion Sanders Continues Strict Rule-Making at Colorado With Non-Football Implementation for Buffs Players

Deion Sanders returns to Colorado after his health battle and sets strict classroom standards for players, making discipline a top priority.

Deion Sanders wasted no time making his presence known at Colorado. Just weeks after sharing that he beat bladder cancer, the Colorado coach returned to campus and immediately laid down strict classroom rules for his players.

Why Is Deion Sanders Enforcing Tough Classroom Rules on His Colorado Players?

Sanders’s arrival after a long absence battling illness immediately set the tone: the coach is still watching everything. Back in front of his team, Sanders made it clear that classroom conduct matters just as much as performance on the field.

In an Instagram reel, Sanders spelled out the expectations in a team meeting before classes started. Players were told slides, hoodies, and headphones are not welcome on campus or in classrooms.

“If I see you with slides on campus tomorrow, it’s going to be a problem. If I see you with a hoodie on in class or some headphones on in class, it’s going to be a problem. If I see you sitting in the back of the classroom, it’s going to be a problem,” Sanders said.

The rules extend to online classes. Sanders wants players focused, with nothing distracting nearby, and expects them to dress appropriately even while at home. “And if you’re online and you have online classes and you don’t have a shirt on or you’ve got a white beanie on or you have something stupid on that causes a distraction or you walk around during that online session, it’s going to be a problem.”

Sanders assigned graduate assistants and coaches to monitor players in classrooms. “GAs, coaches, appoint your guys, whoever is going on campus, because I want classes being checked tomorrow, the ones that have those classes,” he told staff in the video.

What Drives Sanders’s Demands for Academic Discipline?

Sanders’s focus on discipline extends from the football field to every part of college life. The classroom rules fit into a larger strategy for his players. Now, poor grades mean a cut in NIL payouts, putting locker room earnings directly on the line with academic performance.

The Colorado coach requires his team’s financial literacy and public speaking courses, knowing most will need careers beyond football. He keeps reminding everyone that 95% of the roster will go pro in something other than football.

Sanders stresses communication and knowledge. “Communication and knowledge is wealth,” he says, aiming to help these athletes succeed in life, not just on the field.

Plus, he warns his players to stay off social media when locked into football and school. He points out that online hype only lasts if you perform. “They’re going to eat you alive if you perform like that,” Sanders said, referring to the heat players face when their play falls short.

The new standards will be in effect at the start of the 2025 season. Colorado opens against Georgia Tech on Friday, August 29, at 8 p.m. ET.

Sanders’s return from his health battle shows nothing has changed. The classroom rules send a message: this coach still expects his players to chase excellence everywhere.
