Miami’s battle for Darian Mensah ultimately came to an end as the quarterback committed to the Hurricanes on Tuesday. With the move, Miami has now secured what is widely considered the top transfer quarterback for the third straight portal cycle.
The Hurricanes’ continuous success in building the trenches and attracting elite quarterback transfers has now positioned them to remain a contender year after year.
Duke Transfer Darian Mensah Propels Miami Into Preseason Spotlight
Mensah transferred to Duke in Dec. 2024 after a standout redshirt freshman season at Tulane, and he quickly made an impact with the Blue Devils.
Mensah visited Miami on Tuesday before announcing his commitment to the Hurricanes. With his addition, ACC analyst Eric Mac Lain made a bold statement about the program’s outlook in 2026.
“With the addition of Darian Mensah… the Miami Hurricanes should be the preseason #1 team in the country… this team is STACKED,” Mac Lain tweeted.
Mensah had initially planned to remain at Duke for the 2026 season and opted against entering the NFL draft. However, he ultimately entered the transfer portal on Jan. 16, which was the final day of its two-week open period. Duke filed a lawsuit alleging that Mensah breached a multi-year NIL contract he signed in July.

The Blue Devils were briefly granted a temporary restraining order to prevent his enrollment elsewhere, but the case was dismissed on Tuesday.
“Through close collaboration and principled negotiation, we have successfully navigated an unprecedented path, one that has now reached a fair and mutually agreeable resolution,” Mensah’s agency said in a statement.
Mensah has two more years of eligibility remaining and will take over for Carson Beck at Miami, who led the Hurricanes to their first national championship game in 2025 since the 2002 season.
Mensah ranks No. 11 nationally in the PFSN’s CFB QB Impact Metric with a score of 88.2. He threw for 3,973 yards with 34 touchdowns and a 66.8% completion rate in 2025, ranking second in total passing yards in FBS and first in the ACC. Combined with his 2,723 yards and 22 touchdowns at Tulane in 2024, he has amassed 6,696 passing yards in his college career.
Mensah’s visit to Miami included former Duke wide receiver Cooper Barkate, who also announced his transfer to the Hurricanes on the same day. Barkate finished last season with 72 receptions for 1,106 yards.
With both Mensah and Barkate joining Miami, the Hurricanes rise to No. 4 in the 247Sports Transfer Rankings. This marks Miami’s second consecutive year in the Top 5 and fourth straight year in the Top 10.
Meanwhile, a high-voltage revenge game is loading, as Duke is scheduled for a road game against Miami on Nov. 14.
