‘This Ain’t the Type of History You Wanna Be Making’ — 2-Time CFB National Champion Rips Dae’Quan Wright’s ‘Embarrassing’ Return to College

Damien Harris strongly criticized Dae’Quan Wright’s decision to return to college football after his NFL training camp stint.

Dae’Quan Wright has already been waived by the Cleveland Browns, and the former Ole Miss tight end is now another step closer to making an unexpected return to college football and joining LSU for the upcoming season.

However, two-time College Football National Champion Damien Harris does not appear to support Wright’s unusual career move, as he delivered a stern message while discussing his decision.

Damien Harris Calls Out Dae’Quan Wright’s Unusual LSU Move

Wright is among the players challenging the NCAA’s new eligibility regulations, which grant athletes a 5-year window to compete in college sports.

Later, the courts ruled that Wright and the other players involved should be allowed to benefit from the NCAA’s retroactive decision. However, the ruling has already sparked significant debate across college football.

During an interview with CBS Sports, Harris openly criticized Wright’s decision to pursue enrollment at LSU after taking part in Cleveland’s preseason activities. Harris made it clear that, in his view, Wright’s situation is not the kind of precedent anyone should want to establish.

“First and foremost, I want to say this ain’t the type of history that you want to be making,” Harris said. “And to be honest, I’m gonna be very candid. I think that this is embarrassing.”

It is highly uncommon for a player who just participated in an NFL training camp to attempt to return to college football. Browns head coach Todd Monken expressed his disbelief over the unusual situation, describing it as “crazy.”

Harris later explained why he believes Wright’s decision could negatively affect other college players who are already competing for roster opportunities.

“I think to go through an NFL training camp, go through the process of being selected or being signed as an undrafted free agent, going through the preseason, playing preseason football, playing NFL football, and then returning to college and taking up a roster spot from somebody who is deserving of their time there. I think that this is very elementary.”

Wright spent four seasons playing college football, beginning with two seasons at Virginia Tech before transferring to Ole Miss for his final two years. The tight end played under Lane Kiffin during his time with the Rebels and posted a PFN College Tight End Impact score of 80.6 last season, which ranked him No. 20 nationally.

After going undrafted, Wright signed with the Philadelphia Eagles before eventually being claimed on waivers by the Browns.

However, after the latest development, Cleveland made a corresponding roster move Monday. The Browns activated starting defensive tackle Maliek Collins from the physically unable to perform list after Wright was waived.
