Dabo Swinney has been the head coach of the Clemson Tigers since 2008, and in that time, he has returned the program to a level of national prominence not seen since the early 1980s. After winning two National Championships in 2016 and 2018, Swinney established a modern powerhouse.
But after nearly two decades stalking the sidelines in Death Valley, with his 56th birthday approaching, many are asking a simple question: How much longer will he keep coaching?
What Is Dabo Swinney’s Coaching Future?
Swinney recently appeared on “SportsCenter” with Scott Van Pelt and laid out exactly where his head is at.
“I was talking to my team about that,” Swinney told Van Pelt. “I feel like I’m 25. It’s just unbelievable. I mean, I love what I do. I am so grateful that I get a chance to be a part of college football.”
His passion became more evident as he continued. “I love the relationships. I love the grind. I love the preparation. I love the challenge,” Swinney exclaimed. “I love the fact there’s somebody’s going to win and somebody’s going to lose and somebody’s going to have this amazing, joyous moment. Somebody’s going to wake up Sunday in the morning and it’s, you know, with just sick to your stomach, but I love that and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
To cap it off, Swinney added, “Nobody in college football is normal. Like, who signs up for that? We just spend all of our time preparing, working, training, meeting, practicing, and so on, but man, I love it. And it never gets old.”
Based on those comments, Swinney does not seem ready to walk away from the college game anytime soon.
This dedication has been the foundation of his success. Since taking over as head coach midway through the 2008 season, Clemson has had only one losing season under Swinney: a 6-7 record in 2010. After that, he built a true powerhouse.

Since 2011, Clemson has won 10 or more games in all but one season, 2023, with nine wins. That stretch included a spectacular run from 2015 to 2019, during which the team appeared in four National Championship games and won titles in 2016 and 2018.
The 2025 season will mark Swinney’s 18th season and 17th full season as Clemson’s head coach. Clemson will kick their season off on Saturday, August 30, against LSU at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, SC, at 7:30 p.m. ET.
