Dabo Swinney Highlights Parallels With LSU And Shares a Bold Take on Garrett Nussmeier

Both Tigers programs are poised for strong 2025 seasons, boasting some of the top rosters in college football. Not only do they have talented players, but LSU and Clemson also have elite athletes at similar positions. In his game-week press conference, Swinney highlighted these similarities, noting that both programs are built in the same way.

“Similar to us in a lot of ways,” Swinney said. “They’ve got elite quarterback play, elite skill, and they got dudes in the trenches on both sides. It’s a very similar team as far as just the makeup.”

The most intriguing position battle will be at quarterback, where LSU and Clemson both feature top talent. Swinney has a star in Cade Klubnik, widely considered one of the best players at the position in the country.

Klubnik is coming off a stellar junior season in 2024, leading Clemson to an ACC championship and a College Football Playoff berth while totaling over 4,000 yards and 43 touchdowns through the air and on the ground.

While Kubnik is undoubtedly a star, Swinney also praised LSU’s Nussmeier. He highlighted that, in an era dominated by the transfer portal, Nussmeier stayed at LSU despite being a backup for three seasons and predicted the quarterback would be a high draft pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

“Quarterback’s a really good player,” Swinney said. “He’s a leader, he’s tough, got a lot of respect for him. I’ve never met him, but man, I got a ton of respect for this kid. He’s a guy that has stayed and developed, and now he’s on his way to being a high draft pick.”

It’s high praise for Clemson’s week-one opponent, but it’s well deserved. Nussmeier is a rare case in today’s college football landscape, as he patiently waited his turn to become LSU’s starter.

Swinney’s projection on Nussmeier’s draft status is also backed up. In PFSN’s latest 2026 NFL mock draft, the LSU quarterback was predicted to go No. 1 overall.

The matchup between Nussmeier and Klubnik promises to be one of the most compelling games of Week 1 as Clemson hosts LSU on Saturday, August 30, at 7:30 p.m. EST, with coverage on ABC.
