‘Dabo Swinney NEEDS To Retire’ — Clemson HC Under Fire for Whining About College Football Instead of Fixing His Own Program

Dabo Swinney has never been shy about speaking out when he believes something is wrong with the state of college football. Whether it was his strong reaction to the situation involving linebacker Luke Ferrelli or his criticism of pursuing former NFL players under the NCAA’s newly introduced five-year eligibility rule, he has consistently been outspoken about his views.

Swinney has found support in some corners of the college football world, but plenty of others believe he needs to adapt to the sport’s rapidly changing landscape.

Dabo Swinney’s Old-School Approach Draws Brutal Criticism Ahead of LSU Clash

Swinney is set to begin Clemson’s 2026 season against Lane Kiffin’s LSU, which has been at the center of efforts to bring players who recently participated in NFL training camps back into college football.

Swinney said on Tuesday that he strongly disapproves of the recent changes to NCAA eligibility rules that have made such moves possible.

The Clemson head coach described the current state of college football as “embarrassing,” arguing that the sport has been heading in the wrong direction for quite some time. Swinney said he would prefer that college football establish a clear and consistent set of eligibility rules that cannot be repeatedly overturned in court after players sue to regain their eligibility.

While SEC analyst Paul Finebaum backed Swinney’s stance, saying the Clemson coach was “100% right” during Wednesday’s edition of ESPN’s “Get Up,” Fox Sports Radio analyst Rob Parker took a completely different view.

Parker criticized Swinney for refusing to adapt to the modern landscape of college football.

“Dabo Swinney needs to retire,” Parker said on Fox Sports Radio. “Step down. Step aside. Coaches who won’t adapt to where college football is now need to retire and bow out. The only thing embarrassing about college football is how much money you make. That’s what’s embarrassing.

“I wish somebody in the press conference would have been asked, ‘Are you embarrassed by how much money you make for supposedly amateur sports? How much money (do) you make?’”

The broader issue of NFL players returning to college remains controversial, but analysts such as ESPN’s Jordan Rodgers have suggested that Swinney has struggled to keep pace with the changes brought about by NIL and the transfer portal.

Kiffin and other coaches have increasingly found ways to take advantage of the evolving rules, with players ultimately benefiting financially from the new system. Meanwhile, Swinney has continued to favor a more traditional approach, making him a target for critics such as Parker.

“He doesn’t want players to get money,” Parker said. “He gets money, and now he can’t understand where we are. Dabo Swinney, maybe you should go to college. Get a degree and figure it out.

“College football is not an amateur sport any longer. There is no difference between the NFL, where they pay you, and college football, where they pay you. What part don’t you understand?”

The controversy comes at an important time for Swinney, who enters the season following Clemson’s seven-win season in 2025. Several high-profile coaches, including Brian Kelly and James Franklin, lost their jobs last season, while Swinney managed to retain his position.

However, the pressure could increase significantly in 2026, and PFN currently gives the Tigers only a 9.4% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff.
