Diego Pavia says he wants a national championship, but college football fans aren’t buying it. The Vanderbilt quarterback’s decision to return for another season has sparked a debate that goes far beyond Nashville.
Critics question whether his “one last dance” is really about trophies or just cashing in on NIL money while he still can.
Why Did QB Diego Pavia Really Return to Vanderbilt?
In a recent interview, QB Diego Pavia explained his motivation for returning to Vanderbilt for another season.
“Oh, I gotta finish something that I started. Going 7-6 wasn’t good enough, and I want a national championship. To be back here, one last dance, it’s gonna be awesome,” the quarterback said.

Pavia’s return became possible after he won a lawsuit against the NCAA in December 2024. The lawsuit challenged eligibility rules that count junior college seasons against NCAA eligibility. The ruling gave him another year of playing time, allowing him to continue his pursuit of a championship at Vanderbilt.
The judge who signed the injunction estimated that Pavia could boost his income by $1 million in NIL benefits by using the extra year of eligibility. This financial opportunity has become a central point in the debate about his true motivations.
The quarterback has been vocal about his ambitious goals for the 2025 season. At SEC Media Days, he stated, “The mission ain’t finished. We want to win a national championship”.
His confidence extends beyond individual goals. He also said that “Vanderbilt’s gonna run Tennessee after this year” and called the program “the new staple of college football.”
What Are Fans Saying About Pavia’s Championship Talk?
Despite Pavia’s passionate statements about championships, fan reactions have been mixed. Many view his return as a financial decision rather than an athletic one.
“That guy came back to make six figures for the only year it’ll ever happen in his life. That daddy talk will be over after about three weeks,” one fan commented, suggesting Pavia’s return is more about capitalizing on NIL opportunities.
“Comical. He means $$$, not championships.” This comment directly questions Pavia’s stated motivations, arguing that money was his primary reason for returning.

Other fans expressed skepticism about Vanderbilt’s ability to meet Pavia’s championship expectations. “Buddy, you will be lucky to win five games this year,” one fan wrote, doubting the team’s ability to improve significantly from its 7-6 record.
Some fans pointed to Pavia’s limited professional prospects as motivation for his return. “Because this is the end of the road for him and football,” fans noted, suggesting that Pavia is making the most of his final opportunity to earn money from football.
Other responses revealed frustration with Pavia’s bold predictions. “They shouldn’t let this talk,” one fan said, expressing irritation with what they saw as unrealistic expectations.
Regardless of his intentions, though, Pavia enters the 2025 season with a decent amount of success — something relatively uncommon for the Commodores. This season, “VU” will go on the road to take on ACC foe Virginia Tech. They’ll also take on Utah State, Alabama, LSU, Missouri, Texas, Auburn, Kentucky, and in-state rival Tennessee.
