‘Turned That Ball Over All the Time’ — Coach-Turned-Analyst Urban Meyer Gets Brutally Honest About Miami’s Future With QB Carson Beck

Urban Meyer questions Carson Beck’s fit at Miami as the Hurricanes face a tough 2025 slate with major roster turnover.

As the Miami Hurricanes prepare for a pivotal 2025 season, all eyes are on Carson Beck, the former Georgia quarterback stepping in after Cam Ward’s departure. Ward, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, leaves behind a strong legacy at Miami, but his exit creates a major gap at the most important position.

With changes on both sides of the ball and a tough schedule ahead, Beck must deliver immediately.

Analyst Urban Meyer Voices Concern Over Miami’s Gamble on Transfer QB Carson Beck

The Miami Hurricanes are set to open their 2025 campaign against Notre Dame, and the quarterback situation is already drawing plenty of attention. Urban Meyer, speaking on “The Triple Option,” offered a blunt assessment of Beck, who is now tasked with replacing Ward, the top pick in this year’s NFL Draft.

According to Meyer, Ward was “a generational talent” who often “pulled a rabbit out of a hat” and got Miami “out of a lot of trouble.” Beck, however, enters a program with big shoes to fill and plenty of questions. Meyer’s main concern is not Beck’s talent, but rather the uncertain situation he is stepping into.

“Lost the leading passer, lost the leading rusher, lost the leading receiver, tackler,” Meyer said, highlighting the Hurricanes’ roster turnover.

Meyer believes that instability, combined with a challenging schedule, could make Beck’s first season at Miami difficult.

“I got nine wins or less. I’m going with the under,” Meyer said, referencing Miami’s projected win total of 9.5. He predicted three losses on the schedule, though he did not specify which games.

Beck’s track record at Georgia was impressive. He led the Bulldogs to a 24-3 record as a starter, threw for 3,485 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2024, and was part of two national championship teams, though he was not the starting quarterback in both title games. Despite his achievements, Meyer remains skeptical.

“Carson Beck turned that ball over all the time,” he said. Beck threw 12 interceptions in 2024, which tied for the SEC lead. Dropped passes were also an issue, with his receivers failing to hold onto a significant number of balls last season.

Beck initially planned to enter the NFL Draft, but instead accepted Miami’s NIL offer, reportedly worth $4 million for the 2025 season, and opted for a fresh start in Coral Gables.

Analyst Tom Luginbill of the ACC Network echoed Meyer’s concerns, stressing the need for Beck to return to his earlier form. “With Carson Beck, you’re getting a guy who’s more of your traditional pocket passer. Now, Carson Beck’s got to get back to the 2023 version of himself,” Luginbill said.

The Hurricanes’ 2025 schedule is considered favorable without Clemson, but Meyer pointed out that games against Pittsburgh and NC State will still be tough. He added, “Is Carson Beck the guy, though? That’s a big question.”

The answer to that question may define the entire 2025 season for Miami, as the program places its hopes on a new quarterback and a fresh start.
