‘Insane,’ ‘Gets More Riveting by the Minute’ — CFB World Divided on Wild Revelation That Ole Miss Had FBI Sweep for Bugs After Lane Kiffin’s LSU Move

Is Ole Miss "insane" for having the place swept by the FBI for 'bugs' after Lane Kiffin departed for LSU? The CFB community is split.

Conspiracy theories can take off in a litany of ways. When Lane Kiffin ditched Ole Miss for LSU, the Rebels wanted to do their best to squash any potential future controversies like a bug, long before they came to the surface.

That apparently included getting the authorities involved, and we’re not just talking about the local police here.

Why Ole Miss Roped in The FBI After Lane Kiffin’s Departure

Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding addressed the media this week and was asked whether there was any truth to rumors that the FBI swept the Rebels’ football facilities to search for ‘bugs’ after Kiffin departed for LSU last year.

Golding didn’t shoot the notion down, mentioning that there’s a player on the team who happens to have a parent who works for the FBI, but there wasn’t a full-blown effort to tear the whole place apart out of paranoia. Golding suggests it was nothing out of the ordinary.

“Any bowl game, playoff system, obviously, you’re going to up security,” Golding said. “I’m not sure that there was a hiring process of, ‘Here we go with the FBI.’ I do think we probably have a current player whose dad just so happens to work for the FBI that lives in town, from that standpoint.”

The college football community seems split on this one. Yet, Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wolken suggests Golding’s explanation “makes a lot of sense” compared to other online theories.

“This makes a lot more sense than ‘The FBI came to Ole Miss to sweep the building'”.

Another commenter couldn’t believe it altogether.

“Oh my god, you weren’t lying. This is insane,” they remarked.

Meanwhile, one person suggested that Ole Miss had no issues with Kiffin’s approach when he was still coaching the team. Now that he’s gone, the tide has turned.

“It’s funny how everyone was cool with him being that type of guy when he was with them.”

Another commenter agreed, pointing out how no one took issue with Kiffin’s tactics when he was coaching their team. Now that the cleat is on the other foot, it’s a different story?

You loved him until he wasn’t your guy.”

They’re not alone in remembering how Ole Miss used to rally around Kiffin, but again, it’s different now that he’s coaching a rival.

He was your guy until he wasn’t.”

Just the notion that some coach out there somewhere may have bugged their office before they left for a different program got the wheels spinning for some. One commenter can’t help but wonder if it’s been done before, and if so, who?

“Never considered this… I wonder if a coach ever bugged a place after they left?!?”

One reaction suggested the Kiffin drama belongs in a movie someday. Though that LSU-Ole Miss matchup scheduled for Sept. 19 is looking like must-see TV.

“The movie one day will be epic, maybe even more so than Sept. 19, which gets more riveting by the minute.”

While no one seems willing to detail the extent to which Ole Miss went to scan for possible ‘bugs,’ one commenter pointed out how this type of security search could become a bit of a trend in college football.

“Heard from people close to the program that this happened last season, and while Walker pointed to the Kiffin example, don’t be surprised if more programs start bringing in cybersecurity consultants to protect their systems. Playbook hacking and database breaches are a real concern.”

Though one commenter also “couldn’t fault” the Rebels for seeking the FBI’s help after dealing with Kiffin for six seasons.

Nobody would blame Ole Miss for getting an FBI sweep after Lane 😂😂”

While fans seem split on how Ole Miss reacted, in the world of competitive sports, can anyone blame them for taking every precaution possible? After all, they’re trying to win as many games as possible, and now Kiffin is on the other side.

The last thing Ole Miss would want is to get whooped by their old coach, and have it happen in an embarrassing fashion to the point where some think the Tigers had inside intel. Now, they can sleep soundly, knowing the place isn’t bugged, thanks to the feds.
