No Respite for Former Michigan Coach As NCAA Affirms Sign-Stealing Penalty

NCAA denies the appeal of an infamous former Michigan football coach who was implicated in the 2023 sign-stealing scandal.

The man at the center of the Michigan Wolverines’ sign-stealing scandal will begin serving an unprecedented eight-year ban from NCAA coaching activities immediately, following the denial of his appeal by the collegiate athletic body’s appellate committee.

NCAA Committee Decides To Uphold Former Michigan Defensive Analyst’s Penalty

On Thursday, the NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee rejected the appeal of disgraced former Michigan defensive analyst Connor Stalions, affirming the eight-year show-cause penalty levied against him in August of last year.

With this ruling, Stalions is barred from being hired by any NCAA member institution for athletically related roles until 2033, unless a program successfully petitions for a show-cause exception. Should a college or university hire him during this period, Stalions would also face a mandatory one-year suspension.

Ross Dellenger of Yahoo! Sports shared the decision on social media, including the letter detailing the circumstances and rationale behind the committee’s verdict. In his appeal, Stalions claimed the infractions committee had “misapplied the scouting bylaw,” arguing that violations arose from “procedural errors related to the irregular and prejudicial way” the sign-stealing investigation was conducted.

The appeals committee, however, stated that Stalions failed to “specifically outline arguments regarding these aggravating factors” in his submissions. The committee noted that Stalions challenged the six aggravating factors that led to his designation as an aggravated case.

Between the 2021 and 2023 college football seasons, Stalions reportedly purchased tickets to key games, sending himself or associates to record opposing teams’ sideline signals. Stalions was fired in November 2023 after his scheme came to light the previous month.

More than a year later, the NCAA infractions committee handed former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, who now coaches the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL, a 10-year show-cause penalty for his involvement.

In addition to Stalions and Harbaugh, the NCAA issued a two-year show-cause order and a three-game suspension to former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore, and a three-year show-cause order to former assistant and alumnus Denard Robinson. The program eventually fired Moore in December last year after a Title IX investigation found he allegedly engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a female subordinate

These penalties stem from a two-year investigation into the Wolverines’ 2023 sign-stealing scandal. The committee also imposed fines and additional show-cause orders for other former staff members involved.

The fines could total up to $35 million, including $27 million in recouped postseason revenue over the next two years. Michigan is expected to pay approximately $21 million for the upcoming season and $6 million for the 2025 season, with the program’s football budget of about $7.2 million allocated to help cover these costs.
