Colorado coach Deion Sanders presided over his worst season at the helm of the Buffaloes since his appointment, as they slumped to a 3-9 finish, wiping away goodwill garnered from the nine-win season in 2024. Sanders acted by hiring offensive coordinator Brennan Marion and elevating Chris Marve to defensive coordinator.
Marion and Marve have been charged with flipping the offensive and defensive identity of the Buffs ahead of Sanders’ fourth season in charge of Colorado.
Chris Marve Identifies Colorado Defensive Standouts
While speaking to reporters after Thursday’s spring practice session, Marve highlighted three players who have stood out in the Buffs’ defense, including linebackers Tyler Martinez, Gideon Lampron and Liona Lefau.
“Since they’ve had pads on, there have been a couple of players in each position that have stood out,” Marve said. “I think Tyler Martinez has come in and done really well. Really smart, doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, very confident and puts in the time outside of what you require.
“Lampron, exceptional athlete, very explosive, but puts in on tape too, plays extremely fast. Liona has displayed the type of athleticism, the intellect that he has as a player. Excited about those three.”
Martinez joined the Buffs from the New Mexico State Aggies via the transfer portal in January and was joined by Lampron, who earned first-team All-MAC honors at Bowling Green last season, and Lefau, who played for the Texas Longhorns before his transfer to Boulder.
Last season, Colorado’s defense conceded 53 points to the Utah Utes, 52 points to the Arizona Wildcats and 42 points to the Arizona State Sun Devils. The Buffs earned a PFSN College Defense Impact score of 73.7, ranking No. 13 in the Big 12.
Marve revealed the defensive identity he is trying to instill during spring practice to improve the Buffaloes’ defense next season.
“We had four big goals for spring ball: development, identity,” Marve said. “I think we really established an identity this spring. I think the guys bought into what we were trying to preach and what we believe in.
“We want to be violent and aggressive. We want to play extremely fast. We have to play smart. Can’t beat yourself. And then at the end of the day, you have to have relentless effort.”
Marve was the Virginia Tech Hokies’ defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach between 2022 and 2024 before Sanders hired him this offseason. He was elevated to defensive coordinator after Rob Livingston was hired as the Denver Broncos’ passing game coordinator and secondary coach.
