Charles Barkley Invokes Deion Sanders As He Blasts Bill Belichick’s Hall of Fame Snub

NBA legend Charles Barkley invoked a Deion Sanders sentiment to blast Bill Belichick's snub from the first ballot of the Hall of Fame.

The Bill Belichick snub on the Hall of Fame’s first ballot has sparked widespread discussion among fans, players, coaches, and analysts. Despite struggling in college football as the coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels last season, Belichick was seen as a shoo-in for the first ballot of the Hall of Fame.

Belichick holds the distinction of being the coach with the most Super Bowls as head coach (six), as well as two more won as the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator.

Charles Barkley Blasts Bill Belichick’s HoF Snub

During an appearance on the “Dan Patrick Show” on Thursday, NBA legend Charles Barkley invoked a Deion Sanders sentiment to blast Belichick’s Hall of Fame snub vis-à-vis other coaching candidates.

“It’s obviously special when you’re a first ballot Hall of Famer,” Barkley said. “That was a disgrace what happened to Bill Belichick first and foremost. I believe if you haven’t made the Hall of Fame in X amount of time, you’re just in the hall of pretty good. Deion said it a few years ago, and I agree with him.

“If you have to think about these guys on these committees for double-digit years and they finally get in, that don’t mean I’m disrespecting you guys, you were really good, just not a Hall of Famer. In my opinion, Bill should be in automatically. Because now, do you put Tomlin in? You put Mike Tomlin in? You put Harbaugh in? They only won one Super Bowl.”

The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s stringent five-year waiting period for coaching candidates was changed in Aug. 2024, allowing Belichick to be eligible for induction this year.

Analyst Highlights Asterisks in Belichick’s HoF Career

During Wednesday’s segment of “The Herd” podcast, Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd highlighted the various asterisks in Belichick’s decorated coaching career as a reason for the North Carolina coach to wait to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“If you have several asterisks by your name, is it okay to pause for a year?” Cowherd said. “What is the one week of the year that the league values the most? Super Bowl week. In 2007, it was tarnished because of Belichick’s footage of him taping another team. Roger Goodell had to go to the Super Bowl and had to address Belichick’s cheating.”

“The winningest coach of all time, Don Shula, got to a Super Bowl with Dan Marino, David Woodley and Earl Morrall. Is it possible the voters went, ‘Timeout, the classiest guy ever, the winningest guy ever, the guy Belichick’s been chasing forever, Don Shula had to wait five years to even be eligible, and now because of a weird tweak, I got to put Belichick in?'”

An ESPN report stated that one reason Belichick was snubbed by voters was the Patriots’ involvement in the Spygate and Deflategate controversies.
