Where Do Ohio State And Penn State Stand Heading Into Week 10?
After starting the season unbeaten, Ohio State is currently the No. 1-ranked team in the nation. They are coming off a bye week, going into this week’s Big Ten clash, with head coach Ryan Day speaking on how fresh his team is during a recent interview.
“That’s it. We want the fans to be as loud as they possibly can, make it as miserable as possible. I think the crowds have been awesome this year, but we have to be at our best; the fans have to be at their best. We need that on Saturday.”
Meanwhile, Penn State has had a miserable start to the season. Following their most recent loss to Iowa, they are currently 3-4 and, according to PFSN’s playoff meter, are projected to miss a bowl game with a 5-6 record. Despite that, Day still expects a tough challenge.
I’m going to re-emphasize that to our team. I don’t think we’ve ever been 20-point underdogs since I’ve been here, but it’s motivation. No one believes in us, and we’re going to come out and fight like we did at Iowa, or we’re going to fight a little harder.” Interim head coach Terry Smith stated.
Another storyline in this week’s clash is Ohio State’s head coach’s reunion with his former defensive coordinator. Jim Knowles signed a deal to become the new defensive coordinator at Penn State this season after winning the national championship with Ohio last season.
Knowles signed a three-year deal that will average $3.1 million per season. This will make him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football following the signing. His former head coach spoke about the clash this weekend during an interview.
“I won’t be looking at the other sideline at all. I’ll be focusing on our guys; it’s about the players on the field. We’ve got some great men, we’re working hard, and we’ve had a good week of practice,” the Ohio State head coach kept his answer short.
After starting out the season with the 16th-best overall defense in the nation, Penn State’s defense has continued to get worse each week despite hiring Knowles. During their most recent loss to Iowa, they were ranked 65th with an impact score of 74.3.
While many initially highlighted this matchup as one to watch on their calendars at the start of the season, the current prediction from many is that they are expecting Ohio State to make light work of Penn State this weekend.
