For months, every New Mexico quarterback update revolved around when Jack Layne would return. Thursday changed the question entirely, with multiple reports indicating the veteran quarterback will now miss the 2026 season after his troublesome throwing elbow failed to cooperate.
New Mexico opens against Central Michigan on Sept. 5 after a 9-4 breakthrough season, and Layne was supposed to provide continuity for a program carrying legitimate Mountain West expectations into Year 2 under Jason Eck.
Jack Layne’s Lost Season Hits New Mexico Hard
Layne underwent offseason surgery after playing through a torn tendon in his throwing elbow during much of the second half of 2025. As recently as last week, his status had been described as questionable for the opener rather than season-ending, making Thursday’s development a significant turn from the cautious optimism surrounding his recovery.

Jack Thompson called it a “brutal turn of events for the Lobos” in a reaction post, adding that Layne appeared “primed for a breakout year” before the injury pushed that opportunity back.

Chaz Wright had a similar reaction in his post: “Woah… big news out of fall camp. Jack Layne out for the year!”
Greg Flugaur chose a more hopeful message, writing “minor setback for major comeback for Jack Layne” in his response, although he also lamented picking New Mexico as his Group of Five representative in the College Football Playoff.

‘By the Belt: A Mac Sports Blog’ revealed that “New Mexico plans to use multiple backup QBs vs. Central Michigan with returning starter Jack Layne out for the year.”

It fit the mood around a quarterback who had already spent an offseason trying to get healthy enough for one more run.
Lobos Must Rebuild Their QB Plan Before Week 1
Layne gave New Mexico stability last season after following Eck from Idaho. He started all 13 games, completed a school-record 65.1% of his passes, and threw for 2,486 yards with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His 76.1 PFN QB Impact grade ranked him 103rd in the nation.
By the Belt emphasized the immediate consequence in a Lobos update, reporting that New Mexico plans to use multiple backup quarterbacks against Central Michigan. Dom Izzo called Layne’s absence “major news out of New Mexico” in his reaction.

The available options are Oregon transfer Luke Moga, sixth-year senior James Laubstein, and sophomore Toa Fa’avae. Eck had described their competition as close even before Layne’s outlook worsened, and recent camp work suggested New Mexico might need more than one of them early.
A team that entered August wondering whether Layne could make Week 1 is now preparing for an entire season without him. The Lobos still have time to choose a quarterback, but replacing the experience and toughness behind last year’s resurgence is a considerably larger assignment.
