Ed Orgeron is back at LSU, joining Lane Kiffin’s staff in Baton Rouge. He is returning to the Tigers after spending nearly six years as the program’s head coach.

Kiffin has brought in Orgeron as a special assistant focused on recruiting and defense. In this role, he will hit the road to recruit for LSU, an area where he has traditionally excelled.
As the news broke of his LSU return, reactions continued to pour in.
“Wow!! Coach O is back!!” Jake Marsh, the former “Pardon My Take” podcast personality, tweeted.
“This athletic department is absolutely unhinged,” “The Next Round” podcast co-host Ryan Brown tweeted.
“This is the best,” Barstool Sports’ Dan Katz, also known as Big Cat, tweeted.
Orgeron’s long-standing relationship with Kiffin spans decades, as he worked under Kiffin as a defensive line coach at Tennessee and USC between 2009 and 2013. After Kiffin’s firing at USC, Orgeron stepped in as interim head coach in 2013 before joining LSU in 2015 as a defensive line coach and later being promoted to head coach.
Speculation about a reunion had been circulating for some time, given their shared history and Orgeron’s past success in Baton Rouge. Orgeron has also openly indicated a desire to return to coaching in recent years, so this move feels like a natural full-circle moment.
As for Orgeron’s LSU career, he had a 51-20 record as the Tigers’ head coach, won multiple bowl games, and led the program to a national championship in 2019. That title team is seen as one of the greatest in college football history, producing several NFL players, including Joe Burrow and Justin Jefferson.
A series of poor results following the championship season led to Orgeron and LSU parting ways at the end of the 2021 season, but his contribution to the Tigers is undeniable. As for his new role with LSU, reports also circulated that he has recently been working with top LSU recruits, including elite defensive lineman Richard Anderson.
Some predicted a challenging but unique experience with Orgeron’s addition to the new LSU staff.
“We’re either gonna win 2-3 nattys, or everyone’s going to jail. hell, maybe both,” LSU alum and “The Athletic Football Show” co-host Dave Helman wrote.

Since leaving LSU, Orgeron has not held an official coaching job. Before his tenure with the Tigers, he also served as interim head coach at USC in 2013 and at Ole Miss from 2005 to 2007.
