‘Big Time Bluff,’ ‘Kick LSU Out’ — CFB Fans Have Mixed Reactions to SEC Schools’ Aggressive Stance Against Lane Kiffin and Co

Social media appears divided in its opinions regarding the SEC schools criticizing LSU's recruiting of former NFL players.

Lane Kiffin has not coached a game for LSU as of the writing. Yet, his impact in and around the SEC remains almost unparalleled. In a conference with perennial powers like Alabama, Georgia, Texas, and Oklahoma, the focus seems centered on Baton Rouge. Last December, Kiffin left the familiar comfort of Oxford and the University of Mississippi for the far more lucrative environment of the school.

This month, Kiffin signed former Cleveland Browns tight end Dae’Quan Wright. The Browns waived Wright. A Louisiana judge cleared the path for select players to gain an extra year of eligibility. In response, the other SEC schools offered a strong rebuttal to the LSU Tigers’ actions. Social media buzzes with thoughts on both sides of the issue.

Social Media Appears Split on SEC’s Angry Condemnation of LSU

As mentioned, Kiffin’s signings prompted a strong response from the league’s other member schools.

On3 wrote on X, “SEC school executives are exploring extreme measures over LSU adding former professional players. Including boycotting competition, placing LSU on probation, expelling the school from the SEC, and pursuing a federal legal challenge.”

The response from the fans on social media was fluid, moving between support for the Tigers and outright mockery.

“The stupidest of hills to die on, but LSU is so desperate for the CFP revenue they are willing to die a horrible death on the hill,” states one user.

The Tigers spent millions to bring Kiffin to town, giving him a sizable war chest to build a roster, especially on offense, where the Tigers held the No. 16 offensive position in the SEC, according to the PFN’s CFB Offensive Impact Rankings.

Many from inside Louisiana sing a different tune.

“SEC isn’t doing anything, so they’re trying to get members to boycott playing LSU,” cites one fan.

Kiffin completely remodeled the team, bringing in talent from all four corners of the sport. One X user believes that the SEC fears what the team can become, a point shared by another fan, who rebukes the commissioner in the process.

“Lmaooooo the SEC isn’t the SEC without LSU. Sankey won’t do (expletive). Big time bluff here,” one fan said on X.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey offered a strong statement, but Wright, as of this writing, will be allowed to play as the conference changes course.

Undaunted, Kiffin does not seem deterred. With the school’s administration on his side, the coach doesn’t appear to be changing. That could prove costly sooner or later.

“@On3 @RossDellenger Lane Kiffin hasn’t even coached his first game yet at LSU, and he’s already possibly going to be on probation,” observed a user.

Moreover, fans of opposing teams see LSU as a threat, begging the conference to take the ultimate action. “KICK LSU OUT OF THE CONFERENCE,” yelled a Florida Gator fan.

Granted, the conference will not boot LSU from the SEC. However, that doesn’t mean other member schools, and by extension, their fanbase, will be accepting. Meanwhile, not everyone in Louisiana appears to side with Kiffin and his school.

“Replace LSU with Tulane in the SEC,” demanded a Tulane fan.

From a historical standpoint, Tulane joining the SEC would be a homecoming. The Green Wave was a founding member, winning three SEC championships. At the same time, no one is going to dismiss the Tigers. The school has a sizable fan base and generates revenue for the SEC.

While Kiffin’s words and actions drew a target on his program, how that progresses the season remains to be seen.
