Carson Beck Breaks Silence on ‘Bad Blood’ With Georgia As He Clears Air on Transfer

Miami QB Carson Beck shares his thoughts on his former head coach, Kirby Smart, and Georgia as he prepares for the NFL Draft

When Carson Beck left Georgia to enter the transfer portal, it was a surprise to some. However, once he entered the portal, choosing Miami was a shock to no one.

Still, Beck’s departure led many to believe that Beck left because he had bad blood with the Georgia staff.

Carson Beck Clears Air on Georgia Exit After Strong Miami Comeback Season

The decision to transfer to Miami turned out to be a good one for Beck. He completed 338-of-467 passes (72.4%) for 3,813 yards with 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Beck earned a PFSN CFB QB Impact score of 83.3, good for a B, ranking 36th in the country. Beck helped bring the Hurricanes back to national prominence, leading them to the National Championship game, where they lost to the Indiana Hoosiers.

At the NFL combine, Beck has been asked about his time at Georgia, and he cleared the air on the situation. “It was Gunner’s turn to be the quarterback at the University of Georgia,” Beck said. “When I decided to come back to college, I had to go elsewhere. There was no bad blood – I’m not even sure where that comes from. I love the University of Georgia. I love Coach Smart.”

That’s clearly the right way for Beck to handle things, and it’s likely true. After all, he spent four years in Athens, winning the national championship as a backup in each of his first two seasons, before taking the reins as the starter in 2023 and leading the Dawgs to a 24-3 record as a starter.

At one time, Beck looked like the top quarterback in the draft, but with Fernando Mendoza the overwhelming favorite to go No. 1, Beck and players like Alabama’s Ty Simpson and LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier have been fighting for the second quarterback spot, but Beck’s stock has seemingly continued to drop.

Injury struggles have clearly been a major part of the issue. “I don’t think it was a falling in love again, I’ve always loved football. It was more of coming back from an injury,” Beck said. “Being able to come out of that and have the opportunity to play football again. I don’t think it was ever a matter of whether I love football or not. I’ve been doing this since I was five years old.”

Beck had surgery to repair the UCL in his right arm after the 2025 season, and although he made some NFL-caliber throws last season, his arm strength wasn’t what it once was.

Turnovers have been a problem for Beck, and they crept up again at times last season, including four interceptions in a home loss to Louisville and two in the other loss, an overtime defeat at the hands of SMU. Beck is the 156th-ranked player on PFSN’s big board. The NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 23.
