Former Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos stirred controversy after a blunt interview with On3, where he opened up about his stint with the Eagles and addressed tensions with offensive coordinator Steve O’Brien. Now at Florida State, Castellanos did not hold back, prompting a swift reaction.
Current BC defensive back Cameron Martinez publicly fired back, refusing to let the comments slide. Castellanos, known for being one of the ACC’s most electrifying dual-threat quarterbacks despite inconsistency, said his time at BC was challenging.
Eagles DB Cameron Martinez Fires Back After Thomas Castellanos’ Comments
Former Boston College quarterback Castellanos set off a storm of reactions this week following a brutally honest interview with On3 Sports, where he spoke openly about his frustrations during his lone season in Chestnut Hill. Among the responses was a sharp retort from current BC defensive back Martinez, who didn’t hesitate to call out Castellanos’ recollection of his time with the Eagles.
“Mm that ain’t how I remember it 🤔🤣,” Martinez posted on social media, pushing back on Castellanos’ suggestion that he carried the team through the 2023 season without much support.

Castellanos, now at Florida State, said he regretted staying at Boston College after former head coach Jeff Hafley left for the Green Bay Packers in January 2024.
“I really wish I would have left when Hafley left, but I tried to give it another take,” he said. “BC wasn’t the school for me. I wasn’t able to be myself, and I had to try to make myself be something I wasn’t. I just didn’t like it.”
The former UCF transfer revealed that he and new head coach Bill O’Brien clashed early in the season.
“We had a meeting, and it kind of blew up in my face,” Castellanos said. “I did so much for that program, and I did everything that I could, and I just wasn’t repaid the right way.”
Castellanos, who became the first player in BC history to pass for 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a single season, said he often felt “very limited” in the offense. Despite leading the Eagles to their best win total since 2018, he officially entered the portal in December 2024.
Now at Florida State, Castellanos feels rejuvenated, especially with Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator.
“He’s just giving me the keys and allowing me to just be me,” Castellanos said. “I don’t need a dog collar or a leash on me. I just need coach to say, ‘Just go be you. Go play.’”
With Florida State coming off a 2-10 campaign, he sees a shared hunger for redemption.
“It’s my dream school,” he said. “I just feel like it’s right.”
Over the course of 20 career starts, Castellanos has passed for 3,689 yards with 33 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, adding 1,427 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground.
