Syracuse wide receiver Calvin Russell III captured the headlines when he joined head coach Fran Brown’s team for spring practice straight from the university’s basketball program. Russell played under coach Adrian Autry as the highest-ranked recruit for the Orange in the last two decades.

The transition from the hardwood to the gridiron followed a unique path. Russell joined the basketball team in January, appearing in one game against NC State before shifting his focus to football after the ACC Tournament concluded in March.

Despite the excitement surrounding his arrival, the freshman’s spring debut has been put on hold due to a medical setback. On Tuesday, Syracuse head coach Fran Brown issued a brief statement on X that Russell had suffered an unidentified injury during practice and would be out for an indefinite period.

“Calvin Russell III suffered an injury in practice that will cause him to miss an indefinite period of time,” Brown’s statement read. “I’m confident Calvin will return stronger because of our culture, commitment to our players and the relationship Calvin, his family and I have. Calvin, Best believe Orange Nation’s got your back!”
Despite delaying signing his National Letter of Intent, Russell committed to the Orange over offers from the Miami Hurricanes and the Michigan Wolverines. He is the No. 5 wide receiver and No. 31 prospect in the class of 2026, according to ESPN.
Last season, the talented wide receiver led Miami Northwestern to the Florida 3A championship. He tallied 742 yards on 47 catches for eight touchdowns while adding 368 passing yards, four touchdowns, and two rushing scores.
The Orange lost several of its receiving leaders from last season. Russell was expected to lead the team’s new-look receiving corps alongside transfer portal additions Cole Weaver (Miami, OH), Matt Outten (Penn State), and Elijah Moore (Florida State).
The Syracuse passing offense regressed significantly last season, dropping from No. 2 in the country in 2024 to No. 80 in 2025. The unit also struggled in efficiency, earning a PFSN College Offense Impact score of 75.1, which ranked No. 13 in the ACC.

Brown acted aggressively after the Orange finished with a 3-9 overall record in 2025, bringing in 18 players and recruiting the No. 33 class in the country, according to On3.
Russell was tabbed as an immediate starter who would have added a new dimension to the offense led by quarterback Steve Angeli. Angeli is returning from a torn Achilles tendon suffered just four games into the 2025 season.
