Bill Belichick won six Super Bowls as a head coach in the NFL, all of which were with Tom Brady as his starting quarterback.
But now Belichick is singing a different tune, working as North Carolina’s football coach, and he’s been having some trouble identifying a quarterback who can lead the team to glory.
Last year’s QBs, Gio Lopez and Max Johnson, have since transferred to different programs. While the competition was fierce, Belichick has now named his starting QB for the 2026 season, and let’s just say fans think he made the wrong decision.
Bill Belichick Predicted To Fail Again
According to ESPN’s college football insider Pete Thamel, the Tar Heels have named Billy Edwards Jr. the team’s starting QB for their season opener against TCU in Ireland.
That decision prompted one fan to predict a “5-7” record for North Carolina this season.
Another was quick to suggest that Belichick has a “horrible career of scouting QBs,” outside of “lucking into” Brady in the sixth round. “Bill Belichick has a horrible career of scouting QBs. Outside of lucking into 6th-rd pick Tom Brady, his QB track record is abysmal.”

One person was quick to joke about the appearance of Edwards, suggesting he looks like he belongs in the “cornfield” rather than the gridiron.

One Tar Heels fan said he’ll be “supporting this team“, yet he’s not exactly thrilled about the QB1 decision.
“Supporting this team all the way, but I’m not excited about this pick at all.”

Considering Lopez led North Carolina to a 4-7 record, being a copycat version of him isn’t viewed as a good thing here.
Lopez plays for Wake Forest now. Meanwhile, it will be up to Belichick and Edwards to ensure history doesn’t get rewritten in Chapel Hill.
