Former Miami defensive lineman Rueben Bain distinguished himself as one of the best pass rushers in college football last season. Bain is one of the most hyped prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft class and has been mocked as a potential top-10 pick on draft night.
In recent weeks, Bain’s draft stock has taken a hit after measurements at the NFL Draft Combine revealed that his arms measured 30 7/8″. Should he be selected in the first round, Bain would have the shortest arms of any edge rusher picked that high since at least 2003, the earliest year for which combine measurement data is available.
Michael Irvin Defends Rueben Bain Against Arm Length Critics
In a fiery clip posted on his YouTube channel on Monday, Miami legend Michael Irvin blasted the naysayers predicting Bain’s slide down the draft board due to his divisive arm measurements.
“Don’t listen to this. When people are trying to say, ‘He’s slipping down the board and it’s because of his arm length and all that.’ I don’t know if someone is just saying that or just throwing salt. They always threw salt at us because we’re from Miami anyway. I saw something the other day when they had the top rushers and their measurements.

“Nobody talked about his arm length, but his arms were shorter than Rueben Bain’s. Are you joking? It’s about performance, about what you see on the field. But, to Rueben, as I said to Emmitt Smith, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons, when they all got drafted, people were saying the same thing. They’re slipping down the draft board.”
Bain was the engine of the Miami team that earned a PFSN College Defensive Impact score of 89.9, the fifth best in the country, and reached the national championship game against the Indiana Hoosiers.
The previous record for the shortest arm length for a first-round edge rusher since 2003 was held by former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Jerome McDougle at 31 3/8″. McDougle was picked No. 15 overall in the 2003 NFL Draft.
Rueben Bain Dismisses Arm Length Concerns at NFL Combine
While speaking to reporters at the NFL Draft Combine on Feb. 27, Bain addressed the controversy surrounding his arm length and whether teams brought it up during meetings in Indianapolis.
“People keep bringing that up out of nowhere, but no teams brought it up to me, so I don’t bring it up either,” Bain said. “As long as I just talk the talk and walk the walk, play with technique, nobody actually cares about it.

“I’m versatile and I got a hot motor. I could do it at any position, at any time with the best effort, and it’s on film, it’s not something I’m just seeing. I just know that whatever team end up picking me, going to get the best out of me, going to get the best player in the draft.”
Bain terrorized opposition offenses, racking up 15.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble, 83 pressures, and 9.5 sacks, winning the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award and earning consensus All-American honors as a result.
