Arch Manning threw five touchdowns and dominated Sam Houston State in a 55-0 win. But his touchdown celebration still got him in trouble with his mom, Ellen Heidingsfelder.
What Did Arch Manning Say About His Touchdown Celebration?
According to a Twitter post from CJ Vogel, Manning opened up about his exuberant celebration following a rushing touchdown in Texas’ 55-0 demolition of Sam Houston State. The sophomore quarterback admitted his mother wasn’t pleased with his end zone antics.
“It felt good to be back in the end zone. It was probably a little much, my mom was mad at me,” Manning said in the post-game interview. He added that he thought officials might flag him for the celebration.

The celebration in question came on a five-yard touchdown run where Manning dodged a tackle attempt from linebacker Antavious Fish, then stood over the fallen defender and stared him down. Officials quickly separated the two players, and Manning received a warning from referees but avoided a penalty.
Manning’s honest admission came after what he described as “built up frustration from weeks” of inconsistent play.
How Did Manning Perform Against Sam Houston State?
Saturday’s five-touchdown showcase marked a turning point after three uneven starts to the season. His breakout performance included 18 of 21 passes for 309 yards and three passing touchdowns while adding two rushing scores.
Manning completed 13 consecutive passes before exiting in the third quarter with Texas leading 45-0.
The performance came at a crucial time. Manning entered the game with a 55.3% completion rate and had drawn boos from fans during his previous struggle against UTEP, when he threw 10 straight incompletions.
His season began with promise but quickly showed inconsistency. In the opener against Ohio State, he was 17-of-30 for 170 yards in a 14-7 loss. A four-touchdown rebound against San José State suggested progress, but the UTEP showing raised more questions about his development.
Against Sam Houston State, Manning finally displayed the dual-threat ability that made him college football’s most coveted recruit. The combination of accurate passing and rushing ability showed why he’s still considered a future first-round pick.
The performance provided much-needed validation for Steve Sarkisian’s development plan, especially given the intense scrutiny surrounding Manning’s family legacy and NIL deals valued at nearly $7 million.
The celebration and his mother’s reaction showed the unique pressures that come with the Manning name. Manning’s breakthrough performance suggests he’s finding his footing both on the field and within his famous football family.
The bye week comes at a perfect time for Manning to build on this momentum before Texas opens SEC play at Florida on October 4.
