Insider Explains Historical Reason Behind Arch Manning Not Entering 2026 NFL Draft

Analyst backs Arch Manning’s plan to delay NFL jump, citing QB start history as Texas prepares for 2025 opener vs Ohio State.

Arch Manning is facing a question every star quarterback has to answer: Is he ready for the biggest stage, or does he need more time to learn? With Texas set for a huge matchup against Ohio State on August 30, 2025, all eyes are on Manning’s development, especially after his predecessor’s rough NFL preseason.

While some wonder if he’s the right man for the job, one analyst offers a strong take backed by history, arguing that Manning’s situation may be exactly what he needs to succeed.

Why Does Arch Manning Need More Starts Before Turning Pro?

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, on “The Rich Eisen Show”, broke down why Manning’s decision to stay at Texas matters. Breer said, “The thing that people don’t look at is the history of quarterbacks with one year starting. It’s not good, right?… The point is, the minimum threshold I’ve heard is 25 starts before considering joining NFL. Look at Bo Nix. Look at Brock Purdy. Look at James Daniels.”

Adding to this, Breer explained, “The number of college starts has become a really important metric… You need to have seen a lot, you need to have that library built up in your head, and you need to have given it the chance where you put tape out and then teams have a chance to game plan against you.”

This focus on experience is key. Breer said, “So now you’re seeing different looks and teams are specifically attacking you in certain ways. So now you’re showing that you can come back and attack them with whatever they’re throwing at you.” With only two starts so far, Manning is still building the kind of game tape analysts value before a player heads to the pros.

How Does the Manning Family’s Approach Shape His Future?

Breer highlighted the family’s reputation for being smart about football, saying, “There’s all of that that I think the Manning family is acutely aware of, that’s what gives the kid the best chance to succeed in the pros is playing enough games in college so he’s ready. And so I think there’s that piece of it… that a lot of people don’t pay attention to that, I think is a really important piece.”

He believes that even with a championship run, the Manning family will encourage Arch to take his time, ensuring he’s ready when he eventually goes pro. That approach matches what the analyst sees as the best path to NFL stardom: patience, experience, and plenty of starts.

Can Quinn Ewers’ NFL Preseason Struggles Help or Hurt Manning’s Case?

Meanwhile, Quinn Ewers’ tough outing in the NFL preseason has given Texas fans reasons to doubt. Some ask why Manning couldn’t win the starting job in 2023 or 2024. But Ewers led Texas to the 2024 CFP semifinals, and Manning’s youth (true freshman in 2023, redshirt freshman in 2024) means there’s much room for growth. His 67.8% completion rate also signals promise.

Looking ahead, the big test against Ohio State can only help Manning add more game tape. Each snap will give him more chances to react to defenses, build experience, and prove he can handle the pressure. As Texas chases a title in the 2024-25 campaign, Manning’s patience and expertise could make the difference.

By waiting until 2026 to declare for the draft and following the pathway proven by past successful quarterbacks, he’s setting up a shot at a breakout season and a strong case for the 2027 NFL Draft.
