The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) has introduced a new scheduling format, signaling a strategic effort to generate more revenue and remain competitive with other Power Four conferences.
ACC Names 12 Teams to Play Nine Conference Games Next Year
Seeking to change perceptions of being behind the SEC and Big Ten, the ACC is transitioning to a nine-game conference schedule. This move aims to address negative perceptions about finances and stability, especially since those rival conferences have more lucrative television deals.
Recent legal disputes with member schools over financial fairness have further fueled the narrative. The ACC hopes that the new schedule will help close the gap and reshape its reputation as a strong, unified conference.

The additional game could help break tiebreakers more efficiently. It may also eventually boost media revenue when contracts are renewed.
Next year, California, Duke, Louisville, Miami, NC State, Pitt, SMU, Stanford, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest will play nine. Meanwhile, North Carolina, Florida State, and Clemson will next year serve as a transition into a new era. This schedule could benefit a team like Virginia Tech.
New coach James Franklin can use the increased visibility to reintroduce the program nationally. According to PFSN’s Offense Impact metric, the Virginia Tech offense ranked 49th. With the offseason to add recruits and utilize the transfer portal, Franklin could build momentum heading into the new season. Most importantly, the conference champion now has a stronger chance of making the College Football Playoff.
This season, Duke defeated Virginia 27-20 in the conference title game. However, with five losses, the committee did not include the Blue Devils. As a result, Miami served as the ACC’s at-large selection. Miami became the standard-bearer for the ACC as an at-large selection.
In college sports, financial resources drive growth and success, making it essential for conferences to adopt changes that bolster their position. Amid the transfer portal era and intense media rights negotiations, the ACC faces increasing competition from the SEC and Big Ten.
The conference now seeks to use the extra conference game to generate momentum for the league. The central question is whether this scheduling change will not only affect performance on the field but also alter how the conference is viewed nationally, especially in its effort to compete with rival conferences.
