California’s decision to part ways with head coach Justin Wilcox has immediately created uncertainty around the program’s most valuable asset: true freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele.
The 6’3″, 225-pound left-hander has been one of the breakout stories of the 2024 season, leading all FBS true freshmen with 2,787 passing yards while completing 62% of his throws and producing 16 total touchdowns against nine interceptions. Simply put, he has already shown the physical tools and poise to be a future star.
Historically, young quarterbacks rarely remain in programs where the head coach, and often the offensive staff who recruited them, is gone. Unless Cal’s next hire is directly connected to Sagapolutele or the internal infrastructure he trusted, it’s fair to question whether he’ll decide to stay put. His grade of 78.3, according to PFSN’s QB impact metric, is among the highest of all freshmen in the country. For a player of his talent, the transfer portal market would be massive.
Cal’s team-wide underperformance this season only boosts the incentive to explore better roster situations, stronger supporting casts, and bigger NIL opportunities.
Should Sagapolutele test the waters, here are five realistic and intriguing landing spots.
Ole Miss
Ole Miss could be one of the cleanest on-field fits for Sagapolutele. With veteran quarterback Trinidad Chambliss aging out and uncertainty swirling around Lane Kiffin potentially leaving Oxford, the quarterback room could be in flux.
The Rebels do have former blue-chip QB Austin Simmons, whose skill set resembles Sagapolutele’s, but there’s no guarantee he stays or that Kiffin (or a new coach) would pass on adding another elite arm to keep Ole Miss near the top of the SEC.
If Kiffin remains, this becomes especially enticing. His track record of developing transfer quarterbacks is unmatched, and JKS’s mobility and left-handed delivery fit his RPO-heavy, spacing-oriented offense perfectly.
LSU
LSU may quietly be the most logical option, especially if Kiffin ends up in Baton Rouge. With Garrett Nussmeier off to the NFL and no clear successor ready to step in, LSU is almost guaranteed to dip back into the portal to maintain national relevance. And nobody hits the portal harder or more effectively than Kiffin.
Putting Sagapolutele in an LSU offense loaded with elite receivers and SEC-caliber infrastructure could be the fastest route to top-tier production, national exposure, and real playoff contention. If Kiffin wants a plug-and-play SEC-ready quarterback, Sagapolutele is exactly that.
Miami
Miami has turned the portal into a revolving door for quarterbacks in recent years, with headline acquisitions like Cam Ward and Carson Beck. With Beck gone after 2025 and no obvious heir apparent in the room, the Hurricanes will almost certainly return to the portal again.
Miami also has the NIL infrastructure, roster talent, and urgency to compete immediately, all things Sagapolutele could value. Given his blend of size, mobility, and arm strength, he would be one of the hottest names on the market, and Miami would absolutely make that call.
Georgia
This is the sneaky one, but maybe the most intriguing long-term fit. Sagapolutele took an official visit to Georgia and earned an offer in July 2024, shortly after committing to Cal. That indicates real interest from Kirby Smart’s staff, and the Bulldogs rarely pursue quarterbacks they don’t see as having championship upside.
Georgia already has Gunner Stockton, who is likely returning for the 2025 season, but Smart always thinks two steps ahead. If Sagapolutele were willing to develop for a year and wait his turn, much like Dante Moore did at Oregon, he could step into a powerhouse program with the best facilities, protection, and roster depth in the country. If he wants SEC competition and long-term NFL development, Georgia checks all the boxes.
UCLA
Don’t overlook UCLA, especially if Sagapolutele has any desire to remain on the West Coast and closer to his Polynesian roots. Depending on who the Bruins hire as their next head coach, there could be an opportunity to immediately sell Sagapolutele on a fresh offensive vision and a chance to be the face of a program undergoing cultural change.
Incumbent starter Nico Iamaleava hasn’t shown anything that would prevent UCLA from bringing in competition, and a coaching change could push him to re-enter the portal anyway. If UCLA wants a dynamic, tough, moldable quarterback to build around, Sagapolutele is exactly the type of player who could reshape the Bruins’ trajectory..
