Louisiana Illuminator reporter Piper Hutchinson shared that Kiffin used his contractual private flight benefit to take his family to Boca Raton, with the trip costing $40,000, according to LSU Board of Supervisors documents.
The expense was covered by the Tiger Athletic Foundation, the private fundraising arm that supports LSU athletics, while the university pays the majority of Kiffin’s salary.
However, many didn’t like how Kiffin’s travel was highlighted.
“Lane Kiffin’s roster construction, coaching, and development will make #LSU that $40,000 in one single drive against Clemson on September 5th. Nobody cares,” LSU fanpage TigerBait wrote.
“Oh shut up, Piper,” LSU alum Dailey Joy wrote.
Former LSU head coach Brian Kelly did not receive a similar travel perk before his firing last season, and none of LSU’s current coaches have the same benefit.
However, Kiffin’s contract specifically grants him 65 hours of private air travel annually for personal use, which was a provision that is common among major college football head coaches.

That context led many to question the report’s significance.

“So what you’re saying is, Kiffin used a benefit in his contract agreed upon by both parties,” senior college football writer Matt Hayes wrote.
“So, coaches in football, basketball, and even baseball at the college level receive private jet hours for personal use. This is a thing. Ryan Day gets 50 hours per year. Josh Heupel gets 30 hours per year. This list goes on. Sometimes it’s taxable,” Outkick’s Trey Wallace wrote.
Kiffin reportedly signed a seven-year contract with LSU worth $13 million annually, with substantial performance incentives. He will earn a $1 million bonus if he wins the SEC Championship Game with the Tigers, while College Football Playoff bonuses start at $750,000 for a first-round appearance and climb to $3 million if LSU wins the national championship.
However, that big investment isn’t surprising given Kiffin’s caliber, who achieved historic success at Ole Miss, securing multiple 10-win seasons.
