Cardinals vs. 49ers Prediction

We are aware that we’re a couple of blown fourth-quarter leads by the Cardinals away from this being a matchup between undefeated teams, right?

Though they are 1-2 to start the season, the Cardinals have demonstrated to be a much more competitive team than most expected before the start of the season.

Prior to dominating the Cowboys last week as a double-digit underdog, Arizona let a fourth-quarter lead get away in its season opener at Washington. Then, the following week, they blew a 21-point second-half lead in the loss to the Giants.

While the end result is still the end result, it’s difficult to believe that most figured the Cardinals — playing their backup quarterback no less — would be this competitive so far this season.

But this brutal stretch of games for Arizona — Sunday will be the third of four straight games vs. playoff teams from a season ago — lands them in San Francisco to take on arguably the best team in the league and the Super Bowl betting favorites (+600 according to DraftKings SportsBook). The 49ers have proven early on that the hype surrounding this team was absolutely justified.

While most expected the 49ers’ defense to dominate the way it has — they enter Week 4 third in the NFL in total defense — how many had them scoring 30 points in each of their first three games? Dating back to last season, that is six straight games and eight of their last nine in which San Francisco has scored 30 or more points.

They have perhaps the league’s best running back in Christian McCaffrey and four players with 10 or more receptions already in three games. Quarterback Brock Purdy continues to impress, with a top-five passer rating (106.3, 4th) and zero interceptions.

Defensively, San Francisco has held two of its first three opponents under 250 total yards, including last week’s win over the Giants, when New York managed just 150 yards of offense.

So how does quarterback Josh Dobbs and the Cardinals stay in this game? Avoiding turnovers would be a good start.

The Cardinals turned it over twice in the second half of their season opener vs. the Commanders, and that proved costly. But they have been mistake-free for two straight games.

It’s a tribute to the 49ers’ domination that a team like the Cardinals can beat up on the Cowboys one week and be two-touchdown underdogs the next week. Double-digit spreads in the NFL are usually tough to support, and perhaps Arizona won’t have enough offense to stay with this juggernaut of a team in the 49ers.

But I can’t let 14 points in the NFL get away from me.

Take the ‘dogs here.

Best Bet: Cardinals -14 (-112 at DraftKings SportsBook)
