‘It Was a Big Decision’ — NFL Legend Warren Moon Reveals Why He Let Titans QB Cam Ward to Wear His Retired No. 1

NFL legend Warren Moon opens up about giving Titans QB Cam Ward his blessing to wear his retired No. 1 jersey and why it was "a big decision."

Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward will be adjusting to a lot of changes this offseason as he gets used to new teammates and a new coaching staff. The Titans hope that these changes can help Ward realize his full potential and take a major leap as a sophomore.

One person who believes in Ward is legendary QB Warren Moon, who gave the phenom his blessing to wear his retired No. 1 jersey with the Titans last season.

Warren Moon Opens Up About Letting Cam Ward Wear His Retired No. 1 Jersey

Now, in an interview with “Good Morning Football,” Moon opened up about that “big decision” and what went into making it.

“It was a big decision because people look at their number as like gold and you wanna hang onto that as long as you possibly can,” Moon admitted.

“But I got a good run out of that number all the way from college through the Canadian Football League all the way through my 17-year NFL career.”

Moon had an amazing career with the Oilers, as he ranks 13th all-time in passing yards with 49,325; that’s more than NFL legends such as Fran Tarkenton, Dan Fouts, and Joe Montana.

What makes his 49,325 yards even more impressive stat is that Moon did not start playing in the NFL until he was 27 years old. Moon became a nine-time Pro Bowler and Hall-of-Famer, and he’s widely regarded as the best QB in the history of the Titans and Oilers.

However, Tennessee hopes that Ward can someday challenge Moon for that title.

“I felt like it was time to give it up to somebody who has the same abilities to do the same type of things I did as a quarterback,” Moon said of Ward. “I really have a lot of faith in Cam, and I love his background. I love where he comes from, the Houston area, where I played most of my football.

“I think he’s gonna create his own legacy with that number, so I got a good 40-year run out of it with the Houston Oilers, hopefully he’ll get another long run with it with the Tennessee Titans.”

Ward definitely has the physical traits to be a great quarterback. He has an impressive arm, and the hope is that new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll can help him maximize his game. Daboll played a big role in developing Josh Allen with the Buffalo Bills.

The Titans also added some reinforcements to help Ward, drafting WR Carnell Tate (No. 4 overall) and RB Nicholas Singleton (No. 165 overall) and signing WR Wan’Dale Robinson.

Tate had a great college career at Ohio State, ranking as the eighth-best receiver in the nation last season, according to PFSN’s CFB WR Impact metric.

Robinson, who has experience with Daboll from their time together on the New York Giants, was the 35th-ranked WR in the league last season in PFSN’s NFL WRi metric.

Now, all eyes will be on Ward to see if he can make a leap and emerge as the face of the franchise that Moon believes he can become.
