Cam Skattebo Injury Update: Giants Rookie RB Suffers Major ‘Setback’ in Training Camp

Rookie New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo suffered an injury "setback" during a recent practice, according to head coach Brian Daboll.

The NFL career of New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo is already off to a less-than-ideal start, as he suffered an injury during Training Camp. A 4th-round draft selection of the Giants in 2025, Skattebo was hurt during a recent padded practice in an incident that was described as a “setback” by New York head coach Brian Daboll.

Not only was Skattebo frustrated by the ailment when he was seen slamming his helmet down on the field in anger, but he also didn’t finish practice. Right now, the Giants are describing his condition as “day to day,” offering hope that the ailment isn’t serious.

Cam Skattebo Was Selected In The 4th Round (105th Overall) By the Giants In The 2025 NFL Draft

“He’s working back from rehabbing something, so had a little bit of setback yesterday and won’t do anything today,” Daboll said. “Day to day.”

Skattebo isn’t the only injury concern of the Giants, who were also without wide receiver Darius Slayton, tight end Thomas Fidone II, defensive linemen D.J. Davidson, Elijah Chatman, and Jordon Roley, linebackers Chauncey Golston and Ty Summers, and cornerback Korie Black.

The Giants are exactly one week away from their opening preseason game of the 2025 NFL season against the in-state rival Buffalo Bills. Skattebo, born in February 2002 in Rio Linda, California, played collegiate football at Sacramento State and Arizona State.

Last season, after rushing for 262 yards as part of a victory over Mississippi State, Skattebo was named “AP National Player of the Week,” the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, and the Doak Walker Running Back of the Week.

He would also break the school record for total rushing yards in a single season, and even finished fifth overall in voting for the Heisman Trophy as the top player in college football. Skattebo declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and was eventually selected by the Giants with the 105th overall pick (4th round).

Already, his on-field vision is drawing praise from Daboll.

“There’s not many times, at least that I’ve seen him here, like ‘Why is he going where he’s going?’” Daboll said. “He’s got a good feel for the blocking assignments up front, but then he’s got good vision for the second level and at times the third level of when to press the ball, when to cut it back, when to keep it front side.”

The Giants hope Skattebo can return to the practice field soon as they continue preparing for their preseason opener next week.
