‘Cancerous Type of Issue’ — Former NFL MVP Calls Out ‘Toxic’ Brandon Aiyuk for Cryptic 49ers Message

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton slammed Brandon Aiyuk amid the WR's recent offseason beef with the San Francisco 49ers.

Brandon Aiyuk has not taken the field for the San Francisco 49ers since Week 7 of the 2024 season after suffering a torn ACL and MCL. Meanwhile, his dispute with the team continues to escalate, which drew a response from former NFL MVP Cam Newton.

Cam Newton Sounds Alarm on Brandon Aiyuk’s Behavior Amid 49ers Rift

Aiyuk’s ongoing standoff with the 49ers escalated further after he posted a video on Instagram calling the franchise “stupid” for paying him $50 million over eight months.

On the “4th&1 With Cam Newton” podcast, Newton said that Aiyuk’s comments are not only affecting his current situation with the 49ers but could also damage his reputation around the league.

“You need to simmer on down because it’s not the message that you’re sending to the 49ers, brother,” Newton said. “It’s the message that you’re sending to other teams that’s saying to themselves, ‘We don’t want that distraction, this is what he’s capable of. Why would we have that come into this locker room and be a cancerous type of issue? I mean a toxic verse of matter that if he don’t get the ball, if he don’t get things his way, he just gonna go about it in his own way.'”

Aiyuk was drafted by the 49ers 25th overall in 2020, and after requesting a trade in 2024, he later signed a four-year, $120 million extension with the franchise. His recent outbursts came days after he referred to the 49ers as “little-a** boys” and accused them of avoiding financial responsibility.

From a financial standpoint, the situation carries major implications if Aiyuk does not change course. He would potentially forfeit his salary for the year, and the 49ers have already voided his 2026 guarantees, including a $24.9 million option bonus.

Aiyuk has built a strong on-field resume with 294 receptions, 4,305 yards, and 25 touchdowns in 69 games with San Francisco. According to PFSN’s WR Impact Metric, in his last healthy season in 2023, Aiyuk posted an impact score of 92.7, which ranked fourth in the league.

However, his relationship with the franchise has become increasingly fractured. According to 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan, the relationship deteriorated significantly after he stopped reporting to team facilities and reduced communication with staff last year.

Aiyuk has not disclosed specific details behind the breakdown, but his repeated public statements definitely suggest a major rift has formed. Meanwhile, Lynch has already declared that the wide receiver has “played his last snap.”

As the 49ers effectively sidelined Aiyuk without pay while retaining his rights, meaning he cannot simply walk away or force a free-agency exit without the team’s compliance. However, reports indicate that if Aiyuk were to contact Lynch or Shanahan, the team might eventually release him, as it is the best outcome for both parties.
