Cam Newton Calls Eagles ‘A Walking Ticking Time Bomb of Dysfunction’ After A.J. Brown’s Controversial Comments

Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton talked about the Philadelphia Eagles in light of A.J. Brown’s comments regarding the team's offense.

A few hours after a video turned up of Philadelphia Eagles receiver A.J. Brown describing everything outside his family life as “a s*** show,” the wideout clarified that his frustration lies in the team’s struggling offense.

Brown, who caught two passes for 13 yards in Monday’s 10-7 win over Green Bay, said on Wednesday that he was not apologizing for his remarks and spoke out, “We can’t just keep slapping a Band-Aid over the defense doing their job and getting us out of trouble. At what point are we going to pick up our slack as an offense?”

Cam Newton on His View of the Philadelphia Eagles Amid A.J. Brown’s Comments

The Eagles rank low in the league in passing and third-down efficiency, and Brown, on pace for the lowest receiving output of his career, said he is simply calling for accountability.

Speaking Friday on ESPN’s “First Take,” former NFL quarterback Cam Newton talked about the Eagles in light of A.J. Brown’s comments.

“The Philadelphia Eagles (are) a walking ticking time bomb of dysfunction,” he said.

According to Newton, the team’s ongoing internal problems have been concealed by its ability to keep winning. He also mentioned that signs have been present for some time, citing moments such as Nick Sirianni’s emotional interaction with fans in October 2024, sideline frustrations, and questionable coaching decisions, including last season’s controversial choice to “call off the dogs” despite having a strong run game.

He argued that these should be viewed as red flags that were previously overshadowed by the team’s success. Newton also spoke against the notion that Brown’s comments were harmful, instead calling them a necessary reflection of the team’s reality. He framed Brown’s comments as accountability rather than complaint, saying the receiver is “setting the record straight” on what the expectations should be for the offense each week.

According to the PFSN Impact metric, the Eagles’ offense has a score of 76.9 with a C grade. The team ranks 13th in offense among all franchises.

“When you have a person to speak truth … I do not have an issue with my receiver saying that, because he is 100% right,” Newton added. “The defense has been carrying the Philadelphia Eagles.”

Newton also emphasized that strong receivers do not want to be used merely as decoys or blockers; they want to make an impact worthy of their skill level and role within the offense.
