The Green Bay Packers hosted the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football in Week 10. While no one really knew what to expect from these NFC contenders, who have had their fair share of growing pains this weekend, not many were expecting a 3-0 game going into the fourth quarter.
However, the action started to get interesting in the fourth quarter with teams trading touchdowns. While the Eagles were the first to reach the end zone on a four-play, 80-yard drive, it was almost a lot longer after Eagles wide receiver Xavier Gipson made a questionable decision on Philadelphia’s punt return, nearly causing the Eagles to start the drive from their 1-yard line, and fans let him hear it on social media.

With 12 minutes and 46 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Packers punter Daniel Whelan sent a kick down the field, which Green Bay’s coverage team attempted to down at the 1-yard line, batting the ball out of the end zone back into the field of play.
While Packers CB Bo Melton would fail to reestablish himself in the field of play before touching the ball, Gipson decided to pick the ball up from the 1-yard line, running back into the end zone and barely making it out before he got tackled. While the punt ended in a touchback, fans across the league were livid with Gipson, as this account posted the video, saying, “How are you in the NFL, Xavier Gipson. Why are we touching the ball?”

The sentiment was shared by many, as fans could not believe what they were witnessing when Gipson attempted to return the punt, with another fan exclaiming, “Gipson, why would you touch that?”

Some fans sat there astonished, while others called for the Eagles to remove him from the roster after he decided on the punt return. This fan lobbied that Philadelphia shouldn’t let him on the plane, saying, “Xavier Gipson should be cut for that punt return attempt.”

While Gipson hasn’t gotten many snaps with the offense, the head-scratching decision had fans questioning whether he should stay on the return team, with one fan explaining, “Regardless of result, buddy on the Eagles who picked that ball up probably shouldn’t see a punt return snap again.”

It didn’t hurt the Eagles in the end as Melton’s foot did touch the end zone, resulting in a touchback; however, a lot of fans did not care about the result, with this fan saying, “I don’t care that was a touchback, cut Gipson right now, what are you doing picking up that football?”

Thankfully, the mistake did not cost the Eagles any points, and the touchback pushed them 19 yards further towards their only trip to the end zone. The Eagles won the game 10-7 and improved to 7-2 on the season. Their defense, which is ranked 14th in the league based on PFSN’s Defense Impact, inspired them to a huge win against the Packers.
Given some of the other bone-headed decisions in this game, Gipson might avoid some postgame wrath as his coach, Nick Sirianni, has his own questions to answer after a highly questionable fourth-down attempt in the fourth quarter.
