After an electric season filled with big-time throws and clutch moments, especially down the stretch, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams earned the label “The Iceman.” During this year’s NFL offseason, Williams attempted to trademark the nickname.
However, NBA legend George Gervin, famously known as “The Iceman,” has publicly opposed the move.
Why Caleb Williams Is Receiving Backlash for His ‘Iceman’ Trademark Decision
Prominent sports analyst Skip Bayless was one of the first to react to the news and was extremely blunt towards the Bears QB. On Twitter, he wrote: “I’m a Caleb Williams fan. But I was a much bigger Iceman Gervin fan, and I’m offended Caleb and Co. are trying to steal George’s all-time great nickname. I unleash on today’s Arena Gridiron 2:30 E.”
The following day, Bayless sent out a second tweet along with a 20-minute video explaining his thoughts. His caption read: “Caleb, I know you’re proud and you’re stubborn sometimes to a fault, but you know and I know that in this case you’re in the wrong.”
A fan on X piled on, referencing a message from Bayless on his show, The Arena: Gridiron. “Skip Bayless tells Caleb Williams to be original after his attempt to trademark George Gervin’s ‘Iceman’ nickname. Skip points out that even Caleb’s ‘ice in my veins’ celebration D’Angelo Russell started that years ago.”
Denver sports analyst for Mile High Sports, who goes by “Swipa Cam” on X, questioned the situation as well. He asked: “Wait…Caleb Williams is trying to trademark ‘Iceman’…. George Gervin is fighting for that nickname… Are most people on Caleb’s side in this dispute?”
Podcaster and football fan Bart Winkler offered a lengthy, harsh reality check for fans. “My issue with the Caleb Williams George Gervin ICEMAN saga is the complete lack of respect I’m seeing from Bears fans about who George Gervin is… “He didn’t trademark it’s up for grabs” would be a way better argument than “WHO THE F**K IS GEORGE GERVIN.”
“No one respects history or even bothers to learn it. Same issue I have with people asking for retired numbers But I’m a Packers fan so my opinion doesn’t count I guess,” Winkler continued.
Foreign correspondent for Barstool Sports, “The Wonton Don,” provided his opinion all the way back in January. He wrote: “Updated Iceman rankings… 1. George Gervin… 2. Drake 3. Caleb Williams.”
Although Williams’ decision drew strong criticism, he also received some support. On X, The Athletic NFL account wrote: “Naismith Hall of Famer George Gervin is widely considered to be the “Iceman”. That could legally change if Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams, who is attempting to trademark the nickname for himself, has his way.”

Rob Schwarz Jr., blogger for several top sports outlets, offered his thoughts from a business perspective. “I’ll say it… I have no clue who George Gervin is or was in regard to basketball. I’m not the biggest NBA fan but I’ve never even heard of him before all of this “Iceman” nonsense.”
“Not sure why the uproar in regards to Caleb Williams attempting to make a business decision that it sounds like Gervin should have attempted before. Williams, his family and his business team owe nothing to Gervin. Go get your paper if you can!” Schwarz added.
Former NFL quarterback turned NFL analyst Robert Griffin III simply posted a GIF on X with the caption, “Get em!”

Finally, PFSN analyst and NFL draft expert Jacob Infante said, “No matter what happens with the trademark, Caleb Williams is Iceman to me. No disrespect to George Gervin. Helluva career in the NBA. But Caleb embodies that persona and has given it new life in this generation. #Bears”
This past season, Caleb Williams recorded a 76.1 QB Impact Score and led Chicago to its first playoff win since the 2010–11 season. The trademark situation will certainly be worth monitoring as Williams heads into his third NFL season.
