Caleb Downs NFL Draft Projections: Top 3 Potential Landing Spots for Ohio State S

A look at three Caleb Downs draft landing spots that could instantly transform a weakness into a strength for needy teams.

With the NFL Combine now in the rearview mirror and pro days underway, draft season is heating up. Player stock is beginning to solidify, team needs are clearer, and front offices are starting to map out their boards.

One name that continues to stand out is Caleb Downs.

Downs is far more than a traditional safety. He is a true defensive weapon, capable of playing in the box, covering sideline-to-sideline as a single-high safety, or matching up in space. That kind of versatility is exactly what today’s NFL covets.

New York Giants

The New York Giants currently hold the No. 5 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. While that may seem high for a safety, Downs is not a typical prospect.

New head coach John Harbaugh understands the value of a versatile defensive chess piece. During his time with the Baltimore Ravens, he deployed Kyle Hamilton as a do-it-all defender, someone who could impact every level of the field.

Downs offers that same type of impact.

The Giants have invested heavily along the defensive line, but their secondary still needs help. Adding a player like Downs could tie the entire unit together, giving Harbaugh a centerpiece to build around on the back end.

His ability to disguise coverages, stop the run, and create turnovers would immediately elevate this defense.

Kansas City Chiefs

A “down year” for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2025 is something rarely seen in the Patrick Mahomes era.

Injuries, particularly to Mahomes, along with declining play from key veterans, exposed cracks in the roster. However, that also gives Kansas City a rare opportunity: a higher draft pick than usual.

The Chiefs’ secondary has taken some hits, including the departure of Trent McDuffie and safety Bryan Cook. That leaves a clear need for a difference-maker on the back end.

Enter Downs. Widely viewed as a high-level prospect and the No. 1 overall player on PFSN’s Consensus Big Board, he could instantly transform a weakness into a strength. At Ohio State, Downs thrived under defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, helping lead one of the nation’s top defenses.

Pairing his skill set with Kansas City’s defensive infrastructure could be dangerous. With Mahomes expected back at full strength, adding Downs might be exactly what the Chiefs need to launch another dominant run.

Cincinnati Bengals

If there is one word that defines the Cincinnati Bengals’ biggest issue, it is simple: defense.

Led by Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, the offense is elite. But the defense has consistently held this team back.

The Bengals allowed 492 points last season, ranking near the bottom of the league, and too often put the burden entirely on their offense. That imbalance has started to create frustration, especially for a quarterback in his prime like Burrow.

If Cincinnati wants to maximize its championship window, fixing the defense has to be the priority.

Their secondary, in particular, has been a long-standing issue. Drafting Downs would be a massive step in the right direction. His versatility, instincts, and playmaking ability would immediately upgrade the unit and provide a foundational piece moving forward.

Given both his talent and the Bengals’ need, this feels like a perfect match, and potentially his draft floor.
